## What it does

A prospect can agree the product fits, the price is fair, nothing disqualifies you — and still not buy. People with budget have one to three top priorities, and you are not one of them. This skill hunts for the moment that changes that.

It runs step by step. You feed it a keystones file (K1, K2, … with market segments) and, when you have them, customer-interview findings. It harvests real trigger stories from the interviews first and marks them observed, with their source. For the remaining keystones it works backward through lenses: crises, seasonal cycles, strategic windows, personal life-changes. Those get marked hypothesized. Every event lands in `INCITING-EVENTS.md` (E1, E2, …) with the keystone it couples to and a note on how to find prospects in that condition.

Findability gets its own pass. Someone whose site was just hacked is not searching for secure hosting — they are searching for how to tell whether they got hacked. An event you cannot detect from outside still gets recorded, but flagged as messaging-only rather than targetable. Ask it to research current triggers — regulatory changes, funding news, seasonal cycles — and it checks them with search tools instead of relying on stale training knowledge. Do not load it to derive keystones or deal-breakers; those are earlier steps of the method.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-inciting-events -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-inciting-events -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-inciting-events -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install asmartbear/asb-skills asb-carol-inciting-events
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-inciting-events -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills --path .claude/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-inciting-events -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/asb-carol-inciting-events/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the moment that makes a customer buy now rather than someday
- separate real purchase stories from interviews from your own guesses
- tie every trigger event to the keystone it belongs to
- work out how to spot prospects in that condition from outside
- draft ad copy around the customer's experience instead of product features

## Example prompts
- I have keystones — run the inciting-events step
- What makes our customers buy right now?
- Map inciting events onto my keystones into INCITING-EVENTS.md

Takes a keystones file (K1, K2, … with market segments) and, when available, customer-interview findings; walks the keystones one at a time, harvesting real trigger stories from interview evidence (marked observed) and working backward through brainstorm lenses — crises, seasonal cycles, strategic windows, personal life-changes — for the rest (marked hypothesized), recording each event with the keystone it couples to and how to find prospects in that condition, in INCITING-EVENTS.md (E1, E2, …). Load when the user has keystones and asks what makes customers buy now, what triggers a purchase, or 'run the inciting-events step.' Do NOT load to derive keystones or deal-breakers (previous steps), to write the final ideal-customer definition (next step), or to write the ads themselves."

# Inciting Events: What Makes Them Buy Today

A prospect can agree the product is a great fit, the keystone is
exactly what they want, there are no deal-breakers, the price is fair —
and still not buy. Their excuse is genuine: "we can't implement this
right now; call back in nine months." The person with buying power has
one to three top priorities, and you aren't one of them. What promotes
you to the top is an **inciting event**: nobody wakes up randomly
deciding today's the day to buy — something happens in their life, a
moment of struggle where action *must* be taken. This skill maps those
moments, keystone by keystone.

## The mental model

### The inciting event completes the purchase

Three forces, in order: **inciting events are why people buy
anything** (the struggle that forces action now), **keystones are why
they buy from you** (the circumstance that makes your strength
critical), and **deal-breakers carve off exclusions**. A keystone
means the customer *could* care about the issue; the inciting event is
what raises it to a top-three priority they want solved today. That is
