## What it does

This skill runs the fourth step of an ideal-customer method. It takes the weaknesses from a strengths chart (W1, W2, …) plus a keystones file (K1, K2, …) and walks the weaknesses one at a time, asking what circumstances make each one disqualifying rather than merely annoying. Answers land in `DEALBREAKERS.md` as D1, D2, …, each with the anti-market segment that lives in those circumstances and therefore will never buy.

The valuable part is not the anti-market list. Deal-breakers hone the keystones: each one forces a qualifier onto a segment description. "Has an e-commerce store where speed yields revenue" becomes "has an e-commerce store processing at least $5,000/mo." The skill edits `KEYSTONES.md` under its frozen numbers and keeps a change log.

Not every weakness produces a deal-breaker. If a third of the market dislikes it but nobody refuses over it, that is friction — it costs points in comparisons and draws no boundary. Friction goes to the product backlog; deal-breakers go to the market map. The skill advises starting from a segment you can name concretely, because a vague anti-market cannot be excluded from advertising or feature work on purpose. If a devil's-advocate skill such as `asb-rude-qa` is installed, it offers to run the draft through it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-dealbreakers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-dealbreakers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-dealbreakers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install asmartbear/asb-skills asb-carol-dealbreakers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-dealbreakers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills --path .claude/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-carol-dealbreakers -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/asb-carol-dealbreakers/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- separate weaknesses people refuse to buy over from plain friction
- name the segments that will never buy, no matter how well the rest fits
- append qualifiers like a minimum revenue threshold to the ideal-customer description
- keep the anti-market out of advertising and feature plans
- edit the keystones file with a change log while its numbers stay frozen

## Example prompts
- run the deal-breakers step on my weaknesses and keystones
- who will never buy our product, and why
- hone the keystones with the qualifiers the deal-breakers force

Takes the weaknesses from a strengths chart (W1, W2, …) plus a keystones file (K1, K2, …), walks the weaknesses one at a time, records deal-breakers with their anti-market segments in DEALBREAKERS.md (D1, D2, …), then HONES the keystones: appending the qualifiers each deal-breaker forces ('…processing at least $5,000/mo'), editing KEYSTONES.md under its frozen numbers with a change log. Load when the user has keystones and weaknesses and asks who will never buy, what their anti-market is, or 'run the deal-breakers step.' Do NOT load to derive keystones from strengths (the previous step), to find inciting events (the next step), or to write the final ideal-customer definition."

# Deal-Breakers: Who Will Never Buy, No Matter What

A buyer can have three keystones and still be disqualified: if they
require SOC 2 and you don't have it, there is no deal — deal-breakers
trump keystones, and purchasing committees lament it as often as
vendors do. This skill maps those disqualifiers from the weaknesses
chart, names the anti-market segments who live behind them, and then
does the move that sharpens everything upstream: honing each keystone
segment with the qualifiers the deal-breakers force.

## The mental model

### Weaknesses → deal-breakers → anti-market

The procedure mirrors the keystones step exactly, on the other column:
for each weakness, ask **what circumstances make this weakness
disqualifying — not annoying, not a negotiating point, but a hard
no?** Then name the real market segments that live in those
circumstances. Those segments are the **anti-market** — beyond the
edge of your possible market. From the canonical chart: "expensive"
disqualifies anyone with a $5/mo website budget (personal projects;
small businesses in markets where US pricing is unaffordable);
"supports only WordPress" disqualifies everyone already built on
```
