## What it does

The skill walks through querying arXiv with `curl` against `https://export.arxiv.org/api/query`. No API key, no dependencies. Responses come back as Atom XML, parsed with `grep`, `sed` or `python`.

Search prefixes cover `all:`, `ti:`, `au:`, `abs:`, `cat:` and `co:`, with `AND`, `OR`, `ANDNOT` and quoted phrases for combining them. Sorting runs through `sortBy` and `sortOrder`; paging uses `start` and `max_results`. A separate section builds a BibTeX entry from fetched metadata.

A helper script, `scripts/search_arxiv.py`, parses the XML and prints a readable list using only the Python standard library. For citations and related work the skill points at the Semantic Scholar API. Basic use is free but capped at 1 request per second, so bulk lookups need pacing. Full papers are read through `web_extract` on the PDF URL.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill arxiv -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arxiv/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arxiv/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill arxiv -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arxiv/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill arxiv -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arxiv/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NousResearch/hermes-agent arxiv
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arxiv/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill arxiv -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent --path skills/research/arxiv
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arxiv/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill arxiv -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/tree/HEAD/skills/research/arxiv/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find recent papers on a topic
- pull metadata for a paper by its arXiv ID
- generate a BibTeX entry for a reference list
- see who cites a given paper
- read an abstract or full text from the terminal

## Example prompts
- Find the five latest arXiv papers on GRPO reinforcement learning
- Generate a BibTeX entry for paper 1706.03762
- Show me who cites 2402.03300

# arXiv Research

Search and retrieve academic papers from arXiv via their free REST API. No API key, no dependencies — just curl.

## Quick Reference

| Action | Command |
|--------|---------|
| Search papers | `curl "https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?search_query=all:QUERY&max_results=5"` |
| Get specific paper | `curl "https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?id_list=2402.03300"` |
| Read abstract (web) | `web_extract(urls=["https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.03300"])` |
| Read full paper (PDF) | `web_extract(urls=["https://arxiv.org/pdf/2402.03300"])` |

## Searching Papers

The API returns Atom XML. Parse with `grep`/`sed` or pipe through `python` for clean output.

### Basic search

```bash
curl -s "https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?search_query=all:GRPO+reinforcement+learning&max_results=5"
```

### Clean output (parse XML to readable format)

```bash
curl -s "https://export.arxiv.org/api/query?search_query=all:GRPO+reinforcement+learning&max_results=5&sortBy=submittedDate&sortOrder=descending" | python -c "
import sys, xml.etree.ElementTree as ET
ns = {'a': 'http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom'}
root = ET.parse(sys.stdin).getroot()
for i, entry in enumerate(root.findall('a:entry', ns)):
    title = entry.find('a:title', ns).text.strip().replace('\n', ' ')
    arxiv_id = entry.find('a:id', ns).text.strip().split('/abs/')[-1]
    published = entry.find('a:published', ns).text[:10]
    authors = ', '.join(a.find('a:name', ns).text for a in entry.findall('a:author', ns))
    summary = entry.find('a:summary', ns).text.strip()[:200]
    cats = ', '.join(c.get('term') for c in entry.findall('a:category', ns))
    print(f'{i+1}. [{arxiv_id}] {title}')
    print(f'   Authors: {authors}')
    print(f'   Published: {published} | Categories: {cats}')
    print(f'   Abstract: {summary}...')
    print(f'   PDF: https://arxiv.org/pdf/{arxiv_id}')
    print()
"
```

```
# AND (default when using +)
search_query=all:transformer+attention
# OR
search_query=all:GPT+OR+all:BERT
# AND NOT
search_query=all:language+model+ANDNOT+all:vision
# Exact phrase
