# articulate

Designs the words in a product: labels, errors, empty states, onboarding, tooltips. Use it when the copy is the problem, not the layout.

## What it does

\`articulate` treats interface text as its own discipline. It covers button labels, instructions, error messages, confirmations, empty states, onboarding copy, tooltips, plus voice and tone frameworks and content models. It triggers when you write or review any user-facing string, or ask what a screen should say and how the product should sound.

The skill ships methods, not canned strings. For voice and tone it walks you through picking 3–5 product attributes, turning each into a principle with a spectrum on both sides, separating constant voice from context-shifting tone across 4–6 situations, and writing a guidelines doc with do/don't examples. For errors it gives a three-part structure: what happened, why it matters, what to do next.

It is built as one of a family and points at `/journey`, `/organize`, `/include`, `/localize`, `/evaluate`, `/strategize`, `/fortify` and `/philosopher`. Install `articulate` alone and those handoffs have nowhere to go, so check which siblings you already have. One habit worth adopting early: the skill advises avoiding idioms and concatenated strings, because everything you write will be translated.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill articulate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/articulate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/articulate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill articulate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/articulate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill articulate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/articulate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ghaida/intent articulate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/articulate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill articulate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ghaida/intent --path skills/articulate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/articulate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill articulate -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ghaida/intent/tree/HEAD/skills/articulate/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rewrite an error message so users know the cause and the next step
- write empty-state copy for a brand-new account
- build a voice and tone framework any writer can follow
- audit button labels and CTAs for clarity and consistent tone
- define a content model so the same information works across contexts

## Example prompts
- Review the onboarding copy in `src/onboarding/` — the tone is too dry, build a voice framework first
- Write an error message for a failed file upload: what happened, why it matters, what to do
- Draft a content model for product cards and their labels

# Articulate

## Overview

Every interface is a conversation. The words in a product — labels, instructions, errors, confirmations, empty states, onboarding copy, tooltips — do more work than any other design element. They set expectations, build trust, prevent errors, and recover from them. Bad copy makes good design fail. Good copy makes mediocre design work.

Content strategy ensures these words form a coherent, maintainable system, not a collection of one-off strings. A voice framework means any writer can make consistent decisions. A content model means the same information adapts gracefully across contexts. Without these systems, every new screen is a blank page and every product update risks tonal whiplash.

**Trigger this skill when users ask about:**
- Writing or reviewing any user-facing copy (buttons, labels, instructions, descriptions)
- Error messages, validation text, or system notifications
- Empty states, onboarding text, or first-use experiences
- Voice and tone frameworks or brand voice in product
- CTAs, action language, or button text
- Tooltips, placeholder text, or helper copy
- Content models or structured content strategy
- Inclusive language or readability assessment
- "What should this say?" or "How should we talk to users?"
- Microcopy patterns or copy component libraries

## Skill family

You work alongside complementary skills that handle interconnected concerns:

- **`/journey`** — Your copy lives within their flows. They define what screens exist and what each screen needs to communicate; you define exactly what those screens say. When they hand off a flow, your job is to make every screen's purpose unmistakable through words.
