## What it does

The skill kicks in when the trouble is where things sit, not which one matters most. It walks the current layout through five checks: whether spacing is consistent or random, whether hierarchy survives a squint test, whether an underlying grid exists, whether the page has rhythm, and whether density fits the content. Then it proposes a systematic fix instead of nudging individual values.

The plan it lays out: one spacing scale instead of arbitrary numbers, semantic tokens like `--space-xs`, `gap` for siblings rather than margins, `clamp()` for fluid values. For structure it points to Flexbox for one-dimensional blocks and Grid for two-dimensional ones, with `repeat(auto-fit, minmax(280px, 1fr))` for responsive grids that skip breakpoints. Tight grouping inside a block and generous gaps between sections are given as the target.

There is a required step first. The skill loads `$frontend-design` for its design principles and context-gathering protocol, and if no design context exists yet it loads `$setup` before anything else. Skip that and it will not proceed. When the real problem is competing emphasis or heavy section titles rather than space, the skill hands you off to `hierarchy`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill arrange -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arrange/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arrange/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill arrange -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arrange/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill arrange -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arrange/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui arrange
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arrange/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill arrange -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/arrange
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arrange/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill arrange -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/arrange/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- collapse random padding and margin into one scale
- separate crowded blocks with space between groups
- break the same card grid repeated on every section
- set rhythm: tight groups against generous gaps
- pick Flexbox or Grid for a given layout

## Example prompts
- /arrange look at the landing page, the spacing feels random
- /arrange go over the dashboard, cards are cramped and everything looks the same
- /arrange check the pricing section for rhythm and density

description: Improve layout composition, spacing systems, grouping, and visual rhythm. Use when the user mentions weak layout structure, arbitrary spacing, weak grouping, crowded composition, or layout monotony rather than priority/emphasis problems.

---

Assess and improve layout and spacing that feels monotonous, crowded, or structurally weak — turning generic arrangements into intentional, rhythmic compositions.

Use this when the problem is mainly **spatial composition**. If the bigger issue is unclear priority, competing emphasis, loud section titles, or label/value weighting, use `hierarchy`.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/arrange`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

## Assess Current Layout

Analyze what's weak about the current spatial design:

1. **Spacing**:
   - Is spacing consistent or arbitrary? (Random padding/margin values)
   - Is all spacing the same? (Equal padding everywhere = no rhythm)
   - Are related elements grouped tightly, with generous space between groups?
   - Is there more space around groups than within groups? If not, the grouping may feel ambiguous.

2. **Visual hierarchy**:
   - Apply the squint test: blur your (metaphorical) eyes — can you still identify the most important element, second most important, and clear groupings?
   - Is hierarchy achieved effectively? (Space and weight alone can be enough — but is the current approach working?)
   - Does whitespace guide the eye to what matters?

3. **Grid & structure**:
   - Is there a clear underlying structure, or does the layout feel random?
   - Are identical card grids used everywhere? (Icon + heading + text, repeated endlessly)
   - Is everything centered? (Left-aligned with asymmetric layouts feels more designed, but not a hard and fast rule)

4. **Rhythm & variety**:
   - Does the layout have visual rhythm? (Alternating tight/generous spacing)
   - Is every section structured the same way? (Monotonous repetition)
   - Are there intentional moments of surprise or emphasis?

5. **Density**:
   - Is the layout too cramped? (Not enough breathing room)
   - Is the layout too sparse? (Excessive whitespace without purpose)
   - Does density match the content type? (Data-dense UIs need tighter spacing; marketing pages need more air)
   - Would starting with more whitespace and removing some produce a cleaner result than adding whitespace reactively?
