## What it does

This skill fits a service that serves several agents or tenants and has to keep their traces apart in Arize. Every operation must resolve to exactly one `space_id` and `project_name` before its first span starts. Plain single-project tracing is a different job — that is what `arize-instrumentation` covers.

It works in two phases. First inspection: find the entrypoint, the current OpenTelemetry setup, the request boundary that owns the destination metadata, and the stable fields that map to a destination. Then the edits: require `arize-otel>=0.11.0`, initialize routing once with `register_with_routing` or attach `ArizeRoutingSpanProcessor` to a provider the app already owns, write a resolver, and wrap the operation in `set_routing_context`. Child spans created inside that context inherit `arize.space_id` and `arize.project.name`.

You need Python, `arize-otel` 0.11.0 or newer, and a single Arize API key authorized for every destination space. The key is read from the `ARIZE_API_KEY` environment variable, never pasted into code. When routing metadata is missing or invalid, the business operation still runs and its spans stay out of Arize — tenant isolation wins over trace completeness. A fixed Arize exporter has to go at the same time, or spans land in both places; OpenTelemetry processors cannot be removed safely after startup, so that change belongs in initialization.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-span-routing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arize-span-routing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arize-span-routing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-span-routing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arize-span-routing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-span-routing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arize-span-routing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Arize-ai/arize-skills arize-span-routing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arize-span-routing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-span-routing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills --path skills/arize-span-routing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arize-span-routing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-span-routing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- keep traces from several tenants in their own Arize spaces
- route each agent's spans to a separate project using request metadata
- let the business operation finish when routing metadata is unavailable
- swap a fixed Arize export path for dynamic routing without duplicates
- verify that two metadata values produce two space/project pairs

## Example prompts
- Set up Arize span routing in this service: each agent should go to its own space_id and project_name from request metadata.
- Add ArizeRoutingSpanProcessor to the existing provider and remove the fixed Arize export path.
- Check that spans are not exported to Arize when routing metadata is missing, while the operation still runs.

# Arize Span Routing Skill

Use this skill to send each traced operation from one Python service to its correct Arize space and project. Each operation must resolve to exactly one `space_id` and `project_name` before its first span starts.

Do not use this skill for ordinary single-project tracing; use `arize-instrumentation`. This skill does not reroute spans after export, backfill historical spans, create Arize spaces/projects, or invent a customer-specific metadata mapping.

## Safety rules

- Never guess a destination or silently use another tenant's destination.
- Never embed API keys in code or ask users to paste keys into chat. Read `ARIZE_API_KEY` from the environment.
- Preserve existing non-Arize exporters and processors. Remove or replace a fixed-destination Arize export path so routed spans are not also copied to that destination.
- Missing, invalid, or unavailable routing metadata must leave the business operation running but its spans unexported to Arize. Run that operation under a fresh OpenTelemetry context so stale routing values cannot leak across tenants. Log a warning without including secrets or sensitive metadata values.
- Use one API key that is authorized for every destination space. Stop and report a credential blocker if that is not true.

## Phase 1: Inspect and define the contract

Read only until the routing contract is clear.

1. Identify the exact Python service and entrypoint to change.
2. Find current tracing initialization, provider/exporters, instrumentors, and client creation order.
