## What it does

The skill connects your coding assistant to Arize Prompt Hub using `ax prompts` commands. It authors and imports chat transcripts across roles, configures `{variable}` placeholders, and stores them in an Arize space. Every update generates an immutable version with explicit provider settings, model parameters, and optional commit descriptions.

You can move mutable pointers like `production` or `staging` between versions, duplicate templates, or inspect existing prompts by name or ID. Prompt text improvements using traces belong in `arize-prompt-optimization`, while dataset runs belong in `arize-experiment`.

The CLI strictly requires both `--provider` and `--model` on every `create` and `create-version` command, making it impossible to store a prompt without a target model. You must also have the `ax` tool installed and authenticated against your Arize workspace.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-prompts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arize-prompts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arize-prompts/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-prompts -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arize-prompts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-prompts -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arize-prompts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Arize-ai/arize-skills arize-prompts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arize-prompts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-prompts -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills --path skills/arize-prompts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arize-prompts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-prompts -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/arize-prompts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- save versioned prompt templates into Arize Prompt Hub
- assign production or staging labels to prompt versions
- inspect or list existing prompts across an Arize space
- configure model invocation parameters and f-string variables

## Example prompts
- Save this user message template to Arize Prompt Hub with `{input}` variable
- List all prompts in space `my-workspace` using `ax prompts`
- Promote the latest version of prompt `support-agent` to production

> **`SPACE`** — `--space` flags accept a space **name** (e.g., `my-workspace`) or a base64 space **ID** (e.g., `U3BhY2U6...`). Resolve a known name with `ax spaces get NAME`; `ax spaces list` is for human browsing.

## How this skill fits into the prompt workflow

| Skill | Use it for |
|-------|------------|
| **This skill (`arize-prompts`)** | **Workflows A–B:** build or import templates and save · **C:** labels / promote · **D:** list, get, edit description, new version for message changes, delete, duplicate |
| **arize-prompt-optimization** | Improving prompt **text** using traces, datasets, experiments, and the optimization meta-prompt — often **after** you know what to change |
| **arize-experiment** | Running dataset experiments that **consume** Hub prompts or column-mapped inputs |
| **arize-evaluator** | Scoring prompt outputs with LLM-as-judge |

**Typical loop:** Author or elicit the prompt (Playground or chat) → **save** to Hub → run experiments (`arize-experiment`) → evaluate outputs (`arize-evaluator`) → optimize (`arize-prompt-optimization`) → **save new version** → promote with labels.

## Concepts: what is a prompt in Arize?

A **prompt** in Prompt Hub is a named, versioned template stored in a space — not a one-off string in code. It is an artifact you can open in the Playground, diff across versions, and wire to experiments or production workflows.

Each prompt includes:

- **Messages** — an ordered chat transcript (system, user, assistant, tool roles) as stored JSON. Typically a system message for behavior and a user message as the template that receives dataset or runtime variables.
