## What it does

The skill runs a Phoenix-to-AX migration through bundled helpers. The agent handles setup and commands; you supply the source and destination details. It needs Python 3.10 or later, shell access, and network access to both Phoenix and AX. No ax CLI and no AX Phoenix connector required.

It works in stages: inventory Phoenix and count the supported data, propose the AX organization, space and fresh destination names, let you pick all or part of the data, migrate, then verify. Trace and data manifests are built by separate `export` commands, so a failure in one inventory does not discard the other. Before asking you to choose, it makes read-only calls to AX: resolves the space from `ARIZE_SPACE_ID`, runs a trace preflight against the proposed project name, and checks dataset names for collisions. Nothing is created in AX until you say `go`.

Credentials never go through chat. The skill points you at a local `.env` or builds a small owner-only helper that prompts without echo in a separate terminal. If a key does end up pasted into the conversation, rotate it after the migration. Some things stay behind: evaluator definitions, prompts, tags, attachments, span, trace and session annotations, plus dataset, version and experiment descriptions and metadata that AX create APIs cannot represent. Worth checking against your own list before you start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-phoenix-migration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arize-phoenix-migration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arize-phoenix-migration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-phoenix-migration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arize-phoenix-migration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-phoenix-migration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arize-phoenix-migration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Arize-ai/arize-skills arize-phoenix-migration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arize-phoenix-migration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-phoenix-migration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills --path skills/arize-phoenix-migration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arize-phoenix-migration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-phoenix-migration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- move historical Phoenix traces into Arize AX
- copy datasets and experiments into a new AX space
- confirm the imported records actually landed
- migrate only selected trace IDs or datasets
- get direct links to the new AX project, datasets and experiments

## Example prompts
- Migrate all my Phoenix traces and datasets into Arize AX
- Show me what you found in Phoenix first, then wait for my `go`
- Migrate datasets and experiments only, leave traces alone

# Phoenix to AX migration

Help the user migrate a Phoenix project to AX using the bundled helper. Handle setup and commands yourself; the user should only need to supply their source and destination details.

Requires Python 3.10 or later, shell access, and network access to Phoenix and AX. No particular coding agent, ax CLI, or AX Phoenix connector is required.

At the start, give the user this short roadmap before setup or tool calls:

1. Inspect Phoenix and count the supported data.
2. Show the proposed AX organization, space, and fresh destination names.
3. Let the user choose all or part of the data and accept or rename the AX project.
4. Migrate and verify the selected records.
5. Return direct links to the new AX project, datasets, and experiments.

Say that a typical small or medium migration takes about 5–20 minutes, while large exports or AX trace indexing can take longer. Do not promise a completion time. Keep setup narration to stage changes; do not make the user follow routine interpreter, dependency, or endpoint investigation.
