# arize-instrumentation

This skill adds Arize AX tracing to an LLM app: it detects the stack, wires auto-instrumentation and verifies that traces land.

## What it does

The skill runs in four steps: read the manifests and imports, fetch the one matching integration doc, wire auto-instrumentation, confirm a trace arrives. Phase one is read-only — no code or files get touched. In a monorepo or a project with several services it asks which target to instrument instead of picking one for you.

Routing follows the framework, not the provider SDK it wraps. An agent-framework app that imports `openai` somewhere is not a provider-page case. When the stack is missing from the routing table, the skill searches `llms.txt` for its integration page, and falls back to manual instrumentation when nothing matches.

You never paste secrets into the chat. The skill references `ARIZE_API_KEY` and `ARIZE_SPACE_ID`, which you set yourself in `.env` or your shell. It preserves or asks for the app's Arize region and export endpoint rather than assuming US. A project name is required — without it the request fails with HTTP 500, and `service.name` alone is not enough. Go has no integration doc, only a reference for install, wiring and manual spans.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-instrumentation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arize-instrumentation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arize-instrumentation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-instrumentation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arize-instrumentation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-instrumentation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arize-instrumentation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Arize-ai/arize-skills arize-instrumentation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arize-instrumentation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-instrumentation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills --path skills/arize-instrumentation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arize-instrumentation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-instrumentation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/arize-instrumentation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add Arize AX tracing to an LLM app from scratch
- detect the stack and fetch the single matching integration doc
- wire auto-instrumentation without touching business logic
- filter generic HTTP spans so they don't flood the project
- add TOOL and CHAIN spans where no instrumentor covers them

## Example prompts
- Instrument this app with Arize AX tracing and verify a trace lands
- Detect my stack and wire Arize auto-instrumentation; I'll set the keys in `.env` myself
- For my raw Anthropic SDK app, add a TOOL span per tool call and a CHAIN span for the turn

# Arize Instrumentation Skill

Add **Arize AX tracing** to an app for the first time: **detect the stack → fetch the one matching integration doc → wire auto-instrumentation → verify a trace lands.**

**Route locally.** Map the detected stack to a single doc page via [references/integration-routing.md](references/integration-routing.md) and fetch **only that page**. When the app uses an agent framework, route on the **framework**, not the provider SDK it wraps — a bare `openai`/`anthropic` import inside a framework app is not the integration target; route to a provider page only when the app calls the provider SDK directly with no framework in play. When the stack isn't listed there, search [llms.txt](https://arize.com/docs/llms.txt) for its integration page per the router; with no match, use [manual instrumentation](https://arize.com/docs/ax/instrument/manual-instrumentation). Never bulk-read the [PROMPT.md](https://arize.com/docs/PROMPT.md) aggregate.

**Rules:** inspect before mutating; tracing is additive, never change business logic; follow existing style; no secrets in code and **never ask the user to paste secrets (API keys, tokens) into the chat** -- reference `ARIZE_API_KEY`/`ARIZE_SPACE_ID` env vars only, set by the user in their own `.env`/shell; preserve or ask for the app's Arize region/export endpoint instead of assuming US -- see [references/regions-and-endpoints.md](references/regions-and-endpoints.md); ask before persistent local state (`ax` profiles, `.zshrc`, env vars) -- see [references/ax-profiles.md](references/ax-profiles.md).
