## What it does

The skill walks through the full evaluator cycle on Arize. An evaluator is the judge definition: a prompt template with `{variable}` placeholders, a set of classification labels, a model and a provider. A task attaches one or more evaluators to a project or dataset and maps template variables onto span fields through column mappings.

Two kinds of evaluators live here. LLM-as-judge calls a model through an AI integration; a code evaluator skips the model entirely and is a Python class subclassing `CodeEvaluator`, with a strict contract for imports and the `evaluate()` signature. Get that contract wrong and the run cancels silently at `0/0/0`. Remote evaluators call your own HTTP endpoint instead.

You need the `ax` CLI and a configured Arize profile with an AI integration. The skill tells you not to check versions or environment variables upfront — run the command you need and read the error. One rule stands out: if a run fails or returns no scores, the skill reports the failure instead of inventing quality scores by hand.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-evaluator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arize-evaluator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arize-evaluator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-evaluator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arize-evaluator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-evaluator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arize-evaluator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Arize-ai/arize-skills arize-evaluator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arize-evaluator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-evaluator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Arize-ai/arize-skills --path skills/arize-evaluator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arize-evaluator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Arize-ai/arize-skills --skill arize-evaluator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- create an LLM judge with a prompt template and label set
- run an evaluator over project spans or experiment runs
- map template variables to span fields with column mappings
- set up continuous scoring of new spans with a sampling rate
- write a deterministic Python code evaluator without calling a model

## Example prompts
- create a hallucination evaluator for my project and run it on spans
- show me which column mappings my evaluator needs
- turn on continuous monitoring for new spans with sampling

# Arize Evaluator Skill

> **`SPACE`** — `--space` flags accept a space **name** (e.g., `my-workspace`) or a base64 space **ID** (e.g., `U3BhY2U6...`). Find yours with `ax spaces list`.

This skill covers designing, creating, and running **evaluators** on Arize — both **LLM-as-judge (template)** evaluators and **code evaluators** (deterministic, no LLM required). An evaluator defines the judge; a **task** is how you run it against real data.

---

## Prerequisites

Proceed directly with the task — run the `ax` command you need. Do NOT check versions, env vars, or profiles upfront.

If an `ax` command fails, troubleshoot based on the error:
- `command not found` or version error → see [references/ax-setup.md](references/ax-setup.md)
- `401 Unauthorized` / missing API key → run `ax profiles show` to inspect the current profile. If the profile is missing or the API key is wrong, follow [references/ax-profiles.md](references/ax-profiles.md) to create/update it. If the user doesn't have their key, direct them to https://app.arize.com/admin > API Keys
- Space unknown → see [Space](references/ax-profiles.md#space)
- LLM provider call fails (missing provider credentials) → run `ax ai-integrations list --space SPACE` to check for platform-managed credentials. If none exist, use the **arize-ai-provider-integration** skill — never ask the user to paste a provider key into chat.
- **Security:** Never read `.env` files or search the filesystem for credentials. Exception: the non-secret `ARIZE_SPACE_ID` line (see [Space](references/ax-profiles.md#space)). Use `ax profiles` for Arize credentials and `ax ai-integrations` for LLM provider keys. Never ask the user to paste secrets into chat. For missing credentials, see [references/ax-profiles.md](references/ax-profiles.md).
