## What it does

The skill inspects an unfamiliar project using environment tools like `find_grep`, `file_stats`, and `git_log`. It checks build manifests to locate entry points, follows imports between layers, and identifies cross-cutting concerns like auth or logging.

Instead of generic summaries, it generates a concrete map. The result includes a module table with dependencies and call traces with exact `file:line` references. It also lists architectural risks like cyclic imports or god files. Every finding must point to an exact file path, and the skill avoids suggesting rewrites unless asked. Analyzing high-churn files requires terminal access to Git.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill architecture-breakdown -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/architecture-breakdown/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/architecture-breakdown/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill architecture-breakdown -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/architecture-breakdown/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill architecture-breakdown -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/architecture-breakdown/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install autohandai/code-cli architecture-breakdown
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/architecture-breakdown/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill architecture-breakdown -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/autohandai/code-cli --path src/skills/builtin/architecture-breakdown
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/architecture-breakdown/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill architecture-breakdown -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- map an unfamiliar codebase architecture before making changes
- locate entry points, HTTP routes, and background jobs
- detect high-churn files and god modules via Git history
- trace end-to-end data flows with exact `file:line` references

## Example prompts
- Map the architecture of this repository before I begin refactoring.
- Break down the backend architecture into layers, key entry points, and structural risks.
- Survey this codebase and generate a module table with dependency boundaries.

# Break the architecture down

Produce a map, not a summary. The reader should be able to open the right file
for any responsibility without searching.

## Survey

1. Entry points: binaries, `main`, CLI commands, HTTP routes, jobs, event
   handlers. Find them from the build config and manifests, then follow imports.
2. Layers and boundaries: what talks to what. Note the direction of
   dependencies and any cycles.
3. State: where data lives (stores, caches, files), who owns each piece, and
   how it moves between layers.
4. Cross-cutting concerns: config, auth, logging, errors, retries, feature
   flags, i18n.
5. Hot spots: largest files, most-changed files (`git_log --stat` style via
   `run_command`), most-imported modules. These are where changes hurt.

## Write the breakdown

- **One-paragraph shape**: what the system is and its top three modules.
- **Module table**: module, responsibility, key files, depends on, depended on
  by, owner if known.
- **Data flow**: two or three end-to-end traces from entry point to effect,
  with file:line references.
- **Boundaries to respect**: the seams that keep layers separate and the rules
  the code already follows.
- **Risks**: cycles, god files, duplicated logic, missing tests, hidden global
  state, with evidence.
- **Where to start** for the change the user has in mind.

Keep every claim tied to a path. Mark inferences. Do not propose rewrites unless
asked; the breakdown exists so changes fit the structure that is there.
