# architecture-advisor

Runs a questionnaire on domain, team and system lifetime, then recommends an architecture for your .NET project. Useful before you lay out folders.

## What it does

The skill walks through six categories: domain complexity, team and organisation, system lifetime and scale, regulatory requirements, the state of the existing codebase, and integration complexity. Each question is tagged with what counts as a weak signal and what counts as a strong one. Answers map to one of four options: Vertical Slice, Clean Architecture, DDD + Clean Architecture, or a modular monolith.

A decision matrix ties each project profile to a recommendation and states the reason. There is also a section on conflicting signals: default to the simpler option, let high domain complexity override team size and lifetime, and respect what the team already knows — a team fluent in Clean Architecture will move faster there than learning Vertical Slice from scratch.

The skill gives advice only; it writes no code. You still need the matching architecture skill afterwards, such as `vertical-slice`. The author asks you to load `architecture-advisor` before any architecture-specific skill, otherwise the recommendation lands after the project structure is already set.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill architecture-advisor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/architecture-advisor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/architecture-advisor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill architecture-advisor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/architecture-advisor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill architecture-advisor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/architecture-advisor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit architecture-advisor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/architecture-advisor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill architecture-advisor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --path skills/architecture-advisor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/architecture-advisor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill architecture-advisor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit/tree/HEAD/skills/architecture-advisor/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick an architecture for a new .NET project instead of guessing
- work out when a CRUD app does not need DDD
- split a monolith into modules with microservices in mind
- decide what to do with a legacy N-tier codebase
- record why an architecture decision was made

## Example prompts
- Which architecture should I use for a new .NET API?
- Help me choose a project structure, three developers, two-year lifetime
- I want to restructure an existing layered project, where do I start?

# Architecture Advisor

## Core Principles

1. **Ask before recommending** — Never prescribe an architecture without understanding the project. Run the questionnaire first to gather context about domain, team, lifetime, and constraints.
2. **Right-size the architecture** — The best architecture is the simplest one that handles the project's actual complexity. CRUD apps do not need DDD. Startups do not need Clean Architecture. Match complexity to real requirements, not aspirations.
3. **Architecture is not permanent** — Every architecture has an evolution path. Start simple and add structure when complexity demands it. Document the decision so the team knows when to evolve.
4. **Four supported architectures** — dotnet-claude-kit provides first-class patterns for Vertical Slice Architecture (VSA), Clean Architecture (CA), DDD + Clean Architecture, and Modular Monolith. Each has specific strengths and trade-offs.

## The Architecture Questionnaire

Before recommending an architecture, ask questions across these 6 categories. Not every question applies to every project — skip irrelevant ones.

### Category 1: Domain Complexity

| # | Question | Low Signal | High Signal |
|---|----------|-----------|-------------|
| 1 | How many distinct business entities does the system manage? | < 10 entities | 20+ entities with relationships |
| 2 | Do business rules involve multiple entities interacting? | Rules are per-entity CRUD | Complex invariants across entity groups |
| 3 | Are there business workflows with multiple steps? | Simple request → response | Sagas, approval chains, state machines |
| 4 | Do domain experts use specialized vocabulary? | Generic terms (create, update) | Ubiquitous language (underwrite, adjudicate) |

### Category 2: Team & Organization

| # | Question | Low Signal | High Signal |
