## What it does

This skill gives the agent a working reference on Amazon Application Recovery Controller Region switch. Ask it about plans and nested child plans, workflows and steps, execution blocks, CloudWatch alarm triggers, post-recovery workflows or application health alarms. It also covers the difference between active/active and active/passive setups, cross-account support, recovery time and dashboards.

Some answers come with firm limits. Region switch runs failover for a multi-Region application that already exists; it builds neither the architecture nor the data replication. A step that has already started cannot be undone by cancelling the run: you need another plan execution. And the regional endpoint matters, so `start-plan-execution` is called from the healthy Region when you deactivate one.

The skill replies from its built-in knowledge first and falls back to `docs.aws.amazon.com`. Reference files are not on disk when the skill arrives through the `retrieve_skill` tool of the AWS MCP server; fetch them with that tool and the `file` parameter instead of reading the local path.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill arc-region-switch -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/arc-region-switch/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/arc-region-switch/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill arc-region-switch -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/arc-region-switch/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill arc-region-switch -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/arc-region-switch/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws arc-region-switch
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/arc-region-switch/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill arc-region-switch -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/resilience-skills/arc-region-switch
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/arc-region-switch/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill arc-region-switch -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/resilience-skills/arc-region-switch/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map out the parts of a Region switch plan and how workflows chain into steps
- decide between active/active and active/passive for a multi-Region app
- explain to a customer what Region switch covers and what it leaves out
- get the call direction right for `start-plan-execution` on activation and deactivation
- answer a question about recovering from a failure in one Region

## Example prompts
- Walk me through a Region switch plan and tell me when the post-recovery workflow runs
- What is the difference between active/active and active/passive here, and which workflows does each need
- Which Region should call `start-plan-execution` when we deactivate `us-east-1`

# ARC Region switch Expert

## Overview

Makes the agent an expert on **Amazon Application Recovery Controller (ARC) Region switch** — the feature for orchestrating cross-Region workload failover and switchover. Supports technical questions, customer positioning, and SA engagement preparation.

Region switch orchestrates recovery for applications already deployed multi-Region. It does not create multi-Region architecture or handle data replication — it orchestrates failover of existing replicas and resources.

## Guardrail — where this skill's own files live (MCP vs local install)

Before reading a reference file, determine how this skill was loaded:

- **Loaded via the AWS MCP `retrieve_skill` tool:** the skill's reference files are not on the local filesystem. Fetch each one through `retrieve_skill` with the `file` parameter (e.g. `file="references/positioning.md"` or `file="references/doc-links.md"`) — do NOT `file_read` these paths locally or search the filesystem for them.
- **Installed locally** (e.g. `.kiro/skills/arc-region-switch/` or `~/.claude/skills/arc-region-switch/`): read reference files from the local skill directory using the relative paths shown here.

This applies only to the skill's own reference files; always read and write user or session data in the working directory, never through `retrieve_skill`.

## When Not to Use

- **In-Region failover** — Region switch is for cross-Region recovery only. Use AZ-level mechanisms (ALB, Auto Scaling) for in-Region resilience.
- **Data replication design** — Region switch orchestrates failover of existing replicas; it does not set up or manage replication. Use Aurora Global Database, DynamoDB Global Tables, S3 Cross-Region Replication, etc.
