## What it does

This skill drops an Appwrite Kotlin SDK reference into your agent's context. It helps when you build a native Android app or a Kotlin/JVM backend and don't want to re-explain which class does what on every prompt.

Inside are code samples: client-side auth through `Account` with email and OAuth, `TablesDB` operations, file uploads, realtime subscriptions with coroutines, and server-side admin via `Users`, `Storage` and `Functions`. The skill states that new code should use `TablesDB` rather than the deprecated `Databases`, and that string columns get explicit types (`varchar`, `text`, `mediumtext`, `longtext`).

Server-side work needs an API key, since the client is built with `setKey(System.getenv("APPWRITE_API_KEY"))`. On the client you only set the project. If an existing codebase already relies on `Databases`, the skill advises leaving it alone unless you ask otherwise.

The dependency goes into `build.gradle.kts`: `io.appwrite:sdk-for-android` for Android, `io.appwrite:sdk-for-kotlin` for the server.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appwrite/skills --skill appwrite-kotlin -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/appwrite-kotlin/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/appwrite-kotlin/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appwrite/skills --skill appwrite-kotlin -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/appwrite-kotlin/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appwrite/skills --skill appwrite-kotlin -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/appwrite-kotlin/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install appwrite/skills appwrite-kotlin
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/appwrite-kotlin/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appwrite/skills --skill appwrite-kotlin -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/appwrite/skills --path skills/appwrite-kotlin
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/appwrite-kotlin/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appwrite/skills --skill appwrite-kotlin -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/appwrite/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/appwrite-kotlin/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire Appwrite into an Android app written in Kotlin
- add email and OAuth sign-in tied to an Activity
- build table queries with filters and pagination
- subscribe to data changes over realtime with coroutines
- manage users and storage from the server with an API key

## Example prompts
- Add Google sign-in to my Android app using Appwrite
- Write a query for the articles table filtered by done with a limit of 10
- Create a server-side Kotlin method that creates an Appwrite user

description: Appwrite Kotlin SDK skill. Use when building native Android apps or server-side Kotlin/JVM backends with Appwrite. Covers client-side auth (email, OAuth with Activity integration), database queries, file uploads, real-time subscriptions with coroutine support, and server-side admin via API keys for user management, database administration, storage, and functions.

# Appwrite Kotlin SDK

## Installation

```kotlin
// build.gradle.kts — Android
implementation("io.appwrite:sdk-for-android:+")
// build.gradle.kts — Server (Kotlin JVM)
implementation("io.appwrite:sdk-for-kotlin:+")
```

## Setting Up the Client

### Client-side (Android)

```kotlin
import io.appwrite.Client
import io.appwrite.ID
import io.appwrite.Query
import io.appwrite.enums.OAuthProvider
import io.appwrite.services.Account
import io.appwrite.services.Realtime
import io.appwrite.services.TablesDB
import io.appwrite.services.Storage
import io.appwrite.models.InputFile
val client = Client(context)
    .setEndpoint("https://<REGION>.cloud.appwrite.io/v1")
    .setProject("[PROJECT_ID]")
```

### Server-side (Kotlin JVM)

```kotlin
import io.appwrite.Client
import io.appwrite.ID
import io.appwrite.Query
import io.appwrite.services.Users
import io.appwrite.services.TablesDB
import io.appwrite.services.Storage
import io.appwrite.services.Functions
val client = Client()
    .setEndpoint("https://<REGION>.cloud.appwrite.io/v1")
    .setProject(System.getenv("APPWRITE_PROJECT_ID"))
    .setKey(System.getenv("APPWRITE_API_KEY"))
```

## Code Examples

### Authentication (client-side)

```kotlin
val account = Account(client)
// Signup
account.create(
    userId = ID.unique(),
    email = "user@example.com",
    password = "password123",
    name = "User Name"
)
// Login
val session = account.createEmailPasswordSession(
    email = "user@example.com",
    password = "password123"
)
// OAuth
account.createOAuth2Session(activity = activity, provider = OAuthProvider.GOOGLE)
// Get current user
val user = account.get()
// Logout
account.deleteSession(sessionId = "current")
```

### User Management (server-side)

```kotlin
val users = Users(client)
// Create user
val user = users.create(
    userId = ID.unique(),
    email = "user@example.com",
    password = "password123",
    name = "User Name"
)
// List users
val list = users.list()
// Get user
val fetched = users.get(userId = "[USER_ID]")
// Delete user
users.delete(userId = "[USER_ID]")
```

### Database Operations

> **Note:** Use `TablesDB` (not the deprecated `Databases` class) for all new code. Only use `Databases` if the existing codebase already relies on it or the user explicitly requests it.
