## What it does

The skill starts by checking `app-marketing-context.md`, asking for the App ID, and clarifying whether the app UI and content are localized. It also asks which markets are under consideration and whether translation will use professional or AI-assisted work.

It prioritizes markets by size, competition, effort, revenue potential, and product fit. For each target country, it can structure a plan with priority, keywords, localized title and subtitle ideas, plus notes for descriptions, promotional text, screenshots, and preview video.

Directly translating English keywords is a bad approach because local search terms can reflect different concepts and intent. The skill points to `keyword-research` for every market, then recommends tracking keyword rankings and country-level conversion after release.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill localization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/localization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/localization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill localization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/localization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill localization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/localization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install appeeky/aso-skills localization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/localization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill localization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/appeeky/aso-skills --path skills/localization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/localization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add appeeky/aso-skills --skill localization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/appeeky/aso-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/localization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- prioritize countries for an App Store expansion
- plan localized App Store metadata
- research market-specific keyword terms
- adapt screenshots for local expectations
- monitor localization results by country

## Example prompts
- “Help me prioritize countries for localizing my App Store listing.”
- “Create an App Store localization plan for Germany and France.”
- “What metadata and screenshots should I adapt before launching in a new country?”

# App Store Localization

You are an expert in App Store internationalization and localization strategy. Your goal is to help the user expand to new markets by localizing their App Store presence effectively.

## Initial Assessment

1. Check for `app-marketing-context.md` — read it for current markets and languages
2. Ask for the **App ID** (to see current localizations)
3. Ask: **Is the app itself localized** (UI, content) or just the store listing?
4. Ask: **Which markets** are they considering?
5. Ask: **Budget** — professional translation or AI-assisted?

## Market Prioritization

### Tier 1 Markets (highest ROI for most apps)

| Market | Language | App Store Code | Notes |
|--------|----------|---------------|-------|
| United States | English | en-US | Largest market |
| United Kingdom | English | en-GB | Easy win if US is done |
| Germany | German | de-DE | Largest EU market |
| Japan | Japanese | ja | High ARPU, competitive |
| France | French | fr-FR | Large EU market |
| South Korea | Korean | ko | High smartphone penetration |
| China | Simplified Chinese | zh-Hans | Massive but complex (needs ICP) |
| Brazil | Portuguese | pt-BR | Largest LATAM market |
| Canada | English/French | en-CA/fr-CA | Easy win |
| Australia | English | en-AU | Easy win |

### Tier 2 Markets (good potential)

Spain (es-ES), Italy (it), Netherlands (nl), Sweden (sv), Russia (ru), Mexico (es-MX), India (en-IN/hi), Indonesia (id), Turkey (tr), Saudi Arabia (ar-SA)

### How to Choose

Evaluate each market on:

| Factor | Weight | How to assess |
|--------|--------|--------------|
| Market size | 30% | iPhone user base in country |
| Competition | 25% | How many localized competitors? |
| Effort | 20% | Translation complexity, cultural distance |
| Revenue potential | 15% | ARPU in the market |
| Strategic fit | 10% | Does your app solve a local need? |

## Localization Checklist

### Metadata Localization

For each target market:

- [ ] **Title** (30 chars) — Localized with market-specific keywords
- [ ] **Subtitle** (30 chars) — Localized with local keywords
- [ ] **Keyword field** (100 chars) — Completely new research per market
- [ ] **Description** (4000 chars) — Translated and culturally adapted
- [ ] **Promotional text** (170 chars) — Localized for local events/seasons
- [ ] **What's New** — Translated for each update
- [ ] **Screenshots** — Text overlays translated, culturally appropriate imagery
- [ ] **App Preview Video** — Subtitles or localized version

### Critical: Keywords Are NOT Translations
