## What it does

The skill sets the boundaries for mobile design work. It carries hard rules: text contrast of at least 4.5:1, touch targets of 44×44pt on iOS and 48×48dp on Android, Dynamic Type and Font Scaling support, VoiceOver and TalkBack compatibility. Mixing iOS and Android patterns is off the table — SF Pro and a bottom tab bar on one side, Roboto and Material 3 components with ripple on the other.

A separate section covers the design system. Color tokens (primary, surface, error and their variants), a typography scale, an 8px grid, radii, elevation tokens and a component library with defined states. There is also a lookup table for scenarios: a new app, iOS-only, Android-only, cross-platform, redesign, accessibility review.

Accessibility here is a condition of the skill working, not a suggestion. If a mockup falls below the contrast ratio or conveys meaning through color alone, the agent has to flag it. The skill text is truncated, so the iOS principles section is only partly visible.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add majiayu000/spellbook --skill app-ui-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/app-ui-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/app-ui-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add majiayu000/spellbook --skill app-ui-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/app-ui-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add majiayu000/spellbook --skill app-ui-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/app-ui-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install majiayu000/spellbook app-ui-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/app-ui-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add majiayu000/spellbook --skill app-ui-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/majiayu000/spellbook --path skills/app-ui-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/app-ui-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add majiayu000/spellbook --skill app-ui-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- check text contrast and touch target sizes in a mockup
- build a token-based design system before drawing screens
- keep iOS and Android patterns apart in a cross-platform app
- pick a typography scale for SF Pro and Roboto
- run a WCAG 2.2 AA audit over an interface

## Example prompts
- Design an onboarding screen for iOS following the Human Interface Guidelines, show the color tokens and type scale
- Audit this mockup for accessibility: contrast, touch targets, VoiceOver labels
- Build a design system for an Android app on Material Design 3: colors, 8px spacing, components

# Mobile App UI Design

> Expert guidance for designing beautiful, accessible, and platform-native mobile app interfaces following 2025 best practices.

## Core Philosophy

- **User-First Design** — Prioritize user needs, behaviors, and mental models over aesthetics
- **Platform Consistency** — Follow iOS HIG and Android Material Design guidelines
- **Accessibility as Foundation** — Design for all users from the start, not as an afterthought
- **Emotional Intelligence** — Create interfaces that users emotionally connect with
- **Performance-Conscious** — Beautiful design that doesn't sacrifice app performance

## Hard Rules (Must Follow)

> These rules are mandatory. Violating them means the skill is not working correctly.

### Accessibility First

**All designs must meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards. Accessibility is not optional.**

```markdown
❌ FORBIDDEN:
- Color contrast below 4.5:1 for text
- Touch targets smaller than 44×44pt (iOS) or 48×48dp (Android)
- Information conveyed by color alone
- Missing alternative text for images
- Non-keyboard-navigable interfaces
✅ REQUIRED:
- Minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text
- Minimum 3:1 contrast ratio for large text (18pt+)
- Touch targets: 44×44pt (iOS) / 48×48dp (Android)
- Support for Dynamic Type / Font Scaling
- VoiceOver (iOS) / TalkBack (Android) compatibility
- Clear focus indicators for keyboard navigation
```

### Platform Guidelines Adherence

**Follow platform-specific design guidelines. Do not mix iOS and Android patterns.**

```markdown
❌ FORBIDDEN:
- Using Android-style FAB on iOS
- Using iOS-style bottom sheets on Android without adaptation
- Mixing platform navigation patterns
- Ignoring platform typography (SF Pro vs Roboto)
✅ REQUIRED:
iOS (Human Interface Guidelines):
- Use SF Pro font family
- Tab bar at bottom for primary navigation
- Push navigation with back chevron
- Standard iOS controls (UIKit/SwiftUI)
Android (Material Design 3):
- Use Roboto font family
- Bottom navigation bar or navigation drawer
- Material components with ripple effects
- Follow Material You dynamic theming
```

### Consistent Design System

**Every app must have a documented design system with tokens.**

```markdown
❌ FORBIDDEN:
- Ad-hoc colors and spacing values
- Inconsistent button styles across screens
- Multiple unnamed font sizes
