## What it does

The skill covers three Grafana Cloud products that share one OTLP pipe into Mimir, Loki, Tempo and Pyroscope. Application Observability turns OTel span metrics into APM: p50/p95/p99 latency, exemplars pointing at traces, and jumps from traces to logs or profiles. Frontend Observability gets its own section built on the Faro Web SDK, and AI Observability runs through OpenLIT with token, cost and GPU figures plus hallucination and toxicity evals.

Each workflow comes with verification steps. You start Grafana Alloy as a local OTLP receiver, confirm the exporter reports healthy and check accepted and sent span counters. Then the app points at `localhost:4317`, and span metrics should show up in Mimir within a minute. On the React side you add `@grafana/faro-react` and `TracingInstrumentation` so a browser error links back to its backend trace. Some steps defer to files under `references/` for full Alloy configs, per-language SDK examples and the GenAI metric list.

You need a Grafana Cloud stack first: an OTLP endpoint, a numeric instance ID and an API key granted `MetricsPublisher`, `LogsPublisher` and `TracesPublisher`. APM also expects the service to be instrumented with an OTel SDK, the frontend path needs a Faro app key, and the AI path needs Python 3.10 or newer. Missing `service.namespace` or `deployment.environment` keeps a service out of Service Inventory. Leave `span.kind` off outbound calls and the service map shows no edges. Those two gaps break most first attempts.

## Requirements
- Works with: Grafana

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill app-observability -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/app-observability/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/app-observability/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill app-observability -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/app-observability/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill app-observability -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/app-observability/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install grafana/skills app-observability
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/app-observability/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill app-observability -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/grafana/skills --path skills/grafana-cloud/app-observability
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/app-observability/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill app-observability -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/grafana/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/grafana-cloud/app-observability/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up APM from traces a service already emits
- confirm Alloy receives and forwards spans to Grafana Cloud
- instrument a React app for Core Web Vitals and session replay
- trace a frontend error back to its backend span
- watch token spend across LLM calls

## Example prompts
- Set up APM for `my-api` through Alloy and show me how to check the spans in Tempo
- Hook Frontend Observability into our React app and add `TracingInstrumentation`
- Pull token usage per model from OpenLIT

description: Get RED metrics + service maps + frontend RUM + AI/LLM monitoring out of Grafana Cloud — Application Observability (`traces_spanmetrics_*` from OTel traces, p50/p95/p99 latency, exemplar-to-trace, traces-to-logs / profiles), Frontend Observability with the Faro Web SDK (Core Web Vitals, session replay, `pushError`, React + router integration, `TracingInstrumentation` for browser → backend trace correlation), and AI Observability via OpenLIT (token / cost / latency, GPU, hallucination + toxicity evals). Use when standing up APM for a service, wiring an Alloy OTLP receiver + forwarding to Cloud, instrumenting a React frontend for RUM, debugging why service-map edges are missing, monitoring LLM cost drift, or correlating a frontend error to its backend trace — even when the user says "set up APM", "show service map", "monitor browser perf", "session replay", "RUM SDK", or "watch our OpenAI bill" without naming App / Frontend / AI Observability.

# Grafana Cloud Application Observability

> **Docs**: https://grafana.com/docs/grafana-cloud/monitor-applications/

Three products that share the same OTLP + Mimir / Loki / Tempo / Pyroscope plumbing:

1. **Application Observability** — APM from OTel spanmetrics
2. **Frontend Observability** — Faro Web SDK, RUM + session replay
3. **AI Observability** — LLM / vector-DB monitoring via OpenLIT

## Prerequisites

- Grafana Cloud stack + OTLP endpoint + numeric instance ID + API key with `MetricsPublisher` + `LogsPublisher` + `TracesPublisher`
- For APM: app instrumented with OTel SDK; for Frontend: a web app + Faro app key; for AI: Python ≥ 3.10
- Grafana Alloy as the local OTLP receiver (recommended)

## Common Workflows

### 1. Stand up APM — Alloy receiver → Grafana Cloud + verify

```bash
# 1. Set Cloud creds + start Alloy with config from references/apm.md
export GRAFANA_CLOUD_OTLP_ENDPOINT=https://otlp-gateway-prod-us-east-0.grafana.net/otlp
export GRAFANA_CLOUD_INSTANCE_ID=123456
export GRAFANA_CLOUD_API_KEY=glc_eyJ...
alloy fmt /etc/alloy/config.alloy   # syntax check
alloy run /etc/alloy/config.alloy
````
