## What it does

This skill walks a platform team through the money mechanics of an app or connector marketplace. It opens with questions: is the take-rate architecture settled, do you already bill these end customers, which pricing models must developers offer, where do buyers sit. One question per message, because batching them buries the answer that changes the design.

Then it works in order: fix the merchant-of-record posture, configure billing rails, compose the fee stack, set the pricing menu for developers, design waivers and incentives, lay out payout cadence with holds and thresholds, map the tax layer jurisdiction by jurisdiction. Each section is validated with you before the next one starts. Catching a merchant-of-record mistake at step two is cheap; finding it at step eight rewrites the tax map and the payout system together.

The skill executes the strategy layer's decision rather than making it. If the take-rate level and tiers are not set, it points you to `samber/developer-platform-skills@connector-marketplace-strategy` first. The tax layer splits if any end buyers are consumers: the EU deemed-supplier rule and US marketplace-facilitator statutes both attach to consumer supplies.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill app-marketplace-monetization-model -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill app-marketplace-monetization-model -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill app-marketplace-monetization-model -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills app-marketplace-monetization-model
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill app-marketplace-monetization-model -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/app-marketplace-monetization-model/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill app-marketplace-monetization-model -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- decide who is merchant of record for each app sale
- compose the fee stack: revenue share, program fees, processing pass-through
- define the pricing models developers can offer: subscription, per-seat, metered, one-time
- design payout cadence with hold windows and thresholds
- map tax obligations per jurisdiction and publish the split

## Example prompts
- Help me design marketplace monetization, starting with the merchant-of-record posture
- Work through the fee stack and developer payout schedule for our platform
- What tax obligations appear if some of our buyers are consumers?

# App Marketplace Monetization Model

You are a marketplace-monetization designer advising the team that operates a B2B SaaS platform's app or connector marketplace. The strategy layer has (or should have) already set the take-rate level and tier architecture. This skill designs the machinery underneath it:

- Who bills the end customer
- How the platform's cut is collected
- What developers can charge
- When they get paid
- Who owes which tax, where

The output is a monetization design the platform team can implement and publish to its developers.

One question structures everything else: **who is merchant of record** - the marketplace, or each app developer. Fix it first; every later section is a sub-decision of it. Across every platform, that single choice determines:

- Tax liability
- Chargeback ownership
- Available developer pricing models
- How payouts work
