## What it does

The skill hands the agent a working sequence for apktool. Decode with `apktool d <apk-file> -o <output-directory>`, then walk the output tree: manifest, `res/`, `smali/`, `lib/`, `assets/`. It also ships grep recipes for permissions, exported components, the `debuggable` flag, and strings that look like keys or URLs. Native libraries and framework files get their own sections.

apktool and a Java Runtime Environment have to be on the machine first. Unpacked output runs larger than the original APK, and the output directory needs write access — check both before you start, or decoding stops partway. If you only care about code, `-r` skips resources; `-s` skips source. Either flag makes the run faster.

A rebuilt APK will not install until it is signed. The skill lays out the `keytool`, `jarsigner` and `zipalign` chain, plus signature verification. Smali is harder to read than Java, and the skill itself points at jadx when you want Java decompilation instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot --skill apktool -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/apktool/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/apktool/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot --skill apktool -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/apktool/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot --skill apktool -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/apktool/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot apktool
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/apktool/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot --skill apktool -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot --path skills/apktool
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/apktool/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot --skill apktool -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BrownFineSecurity/iothackbot/tree/HEAD/skills/apktool/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get a readable AndroidManifest.xml out of an APK
- hunt for hardcoded keys and tokens in resources
- check the debuggable flag and exported components
- trace a specific class through smali
- rebuild and sign a modified APK

## Example prompts
- unpack target.apk into target-unpacked and list the permissions from the manifest
- search the smali tree for System.loadLibrary calls
- build app-unpacked back into app-modified.apk and sign it

# Apktool - Android APK Unpacking and Resource Extraction

You are helping the user reverse engineer Android APK files using apktool for security analysis, vulnerability discovery, and understanding app internals.

## Tool Overview

Apktool is a tool for reverse engineering Android APK files. It can decode resources to nearly original form and rebuild them after modifications. It's essential for:
- Extracting readable AndroidManifest.xml
- Decoding resources (XML layouts, strings, images)
- Disassembling DEX to smali code
- Analyzing app structure and permissions
- Repackaging modified APKs

## Prerequisites

- **apktool** must be installed on the system
- Java Runtime Environment (JRE) required
- Sufficient disk space (unpacked APK is typically 2-5x original size)
- Write permissions in output directory

## Instructions

### 1. Basic APK Unpacking (Most Common)

When the user asks to unpack, decode, or analyze an APK:

**Standard decode command:**
```bash
apktool d <apk-file> -o <output-directory>
```

**Example:**
```bash
apktool d app.apk -o app-unpacked
```

**With force overwrite (if directory exists):**
```bash
apktool d app.apk -o app-unpacked -f
```

### 2. Understanding Output Structure

After unpacking, the output directory contains:

```
app-unpacked/
├── AndroidManifest.xml          # Readable manifest (permissions, components)
├── apktool.yml                  # Apktool metadata (version info, SDK levels)
├── original/                    # Original META-INF certificates
│   └── META-INF/
├── res/                         # Decoded resources
│   ├── layout/                  # XML layouts
│   ├── values/                  # Strings, colors, dimensions
│   ├── drawable/                # Images and drawables
│   └── ...
├── smali/                       # Disassembled DEX code (smali format)
│   └── com/company/app/        # Package structure
├── assets/                      # App assets (if present)
├── lib/                         # Native libraries (if present)
│   ├── armeabi-v7a/
│   └── ...
└── unknown/                     # Files apktool couldn't classify
```

### 3. Selective Decoding (Performance Optimization)

**Skip resources (code analysis only):**
```bash
apktool d app.apk -o app-code-only -r
# or
apktool d app.apk -o app-code-only --no-res
```
- Faster processing
- Only extracts smali code and manifest
- Use when you only need to analyze code logic

**Skip source code (resource analysis only):**
```bash
````
