## What it does

The skill provides practical patterns for ASP.NET Core versioning with the `Asp.Versioning` library. It steers the assistant toward URL segment versioning as the default choice, sets up `AddApiVersioning` with `NewApiVersionSet`, and configures OpenAPI explorer formatting. It also provides header-based routing with `X-Api-Version` for service-to-service communication.

Its core rule requires versioning the whole endpoint group rather than single actions. Query string versioning is flagged as bad practice because it hurts REST cacheability.

For sunsetting legacy endpoints, the instructions demonstrate `HasDeprecatedApiVersion`. That setup injects the `api-deprecated-versions` response header, giving clients a clear signal before endpoints get removed.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill api-versioning -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-versioning/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-versioning/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill api-versioning -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-versioning/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill api-versioning -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-versioning/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit api-versioning
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-versioning/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill api-versioning -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --path skills/api-versioning
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-versioning/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill api-versioning -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit/tree/HEAD/skills/api-versioning/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure URL segment API versioning in ASP.NET Core
- mark an API version as deprecated without breaking existing clients
- split v1 and v2 route handlers into separate route groups
- switch to header-based versioning for internal services

## Example prompts
- Add URL segment versioning to my ASP.NET Core order endpoints using Asp.Versioning
- Mark v1 as deprecated and scaffold v2 endpoints with updated response models
- Configure header versioning with X-Api-Version for internal service calls

# API Versioning

## Core Principles

1. **Version from day one** — Adding versioning later is painful. Start with a version in the URL even if you only have v1.
2. **URL segment versioning is the default** — `/api/v1/orders` is the most discoverable and cache-friendly strategy.
3. **Never break existing versions** — Add a new version for breaking changes. Deprecate the old version with a timeline.
4. **Version the API, not individual endpoints** — All endpoints in a version group share the same version number.

## Patterns

### Setup with Asp.Versioning

```csharp
// Program.cs
builder.Services.AddApiVersioning(options =>
{
    options.DefaultApiVersion = new ApiVersion(1, 0);
    options.AssumeDefaultVersionWhenUnspecified = true;
    options.ReportApiVersions = true;
    options.ApiVersionReader = new UrlSegmentApiVersionReader();
})
.AddApiExplorer(options =>
{
    options.GroupNameFormat = "'v'VVV";
    options.SubstituteApiVersionInUrl = true;
});
```

### URL Segment Versioning (Recommended)

```csharp
var v1 = app.NewApiVersionSet()
    .HasApiVersion(new ApiVersion(1, 0))
    .Build();
var v2 = app.NewApiVersionSet()
    .HasApiVersion(new ApiVersion(2, 0))
    .Build();
app.MapGroup("/api/v{version:apiVersion}/orders")
    .WithApiVersionSet(v1)
    .WithTags("Orders")
    .MapOrderEndpointsV1();
app.MapGroup("/api/v{version:apiVersion}/orders")
    .WithApiVersionSet(v2)
    .WithTags("Orders")
    .MapOrderEndpointsV2();
```

### Header Versioning (Alternative)

```csharp
options.ApiVersionReader = new HeaderApiVersionReader("X-Api-Version");
// Client sends: X-Api-Version: 2.0
```

### Deprecating a Version

```csharp
var v1 = app.NewApiVersionSet()
    .HasDeprecatedApiVersion(new ApiVersion(1, 0))
    .HasApiVersion(new ApiVersion(2, 0))
    .Build();
// Response headers will include: api-deprecated-versions: 1.0
```

### Version-Specific Endpoint Groups

```csharp
public static class OrderEndpointsV1
{
    public static RouteGroupBuilder MapOrderEndpointsV1(this RouteGroupBuilder group)
    {
        group.MapGet("/{id:guid}", GetOrderV1);
        group.MapPost("/", CreateOrderV1);
        return group;
    }
    private static async Task<Results<Ok<OrderResponseV1>, NotFound>> GetOrderV1(
        Guid id, ISender sender, CancellationToken ct)
    {
        // V1 response shape
````
