# api-testing-patterns

A skill with ready-made patterns for testing REST and GraphQL APIs: contracts, auth, idempotency, race conditions. Useful when writing tests or picking a strategy.

## What it does

The skill lays out three testing levels: contract, component and integration. Each comes with what to check and which dependencies to wire up. Contract tests need nothing external and run fast. Integration tests hit a real database and live services, so they are slower.

Inside are JavaScript examples. Auth checks: no token, expired token, cross-user access. Input validation: required fields, types, ranges. Idempotency via the `Idempotency-Key` header, plus a race condition test for parallel orders. A separate block walks the REST CRUD cycle: create, read, update, delete.

The skill coordinates four subagents. `qe-api-contract-validator` looks for breaking changes in contracts, `qe-test-generator` builds tests from an OpenAPI spec, `qe-performance-tester` load-tests endpoints, `qe-security-scanner` covers API security. For contracts it points to Pact and Spring Cloud Contract, for REST to Supertest, REST-assured and Playwright, for load to k6, Artillery and JMeter. Its advice: test the contract from the consumer side and don't assert on field order or extra fields.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe --skill api-testing-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-testing-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe --skill api-testing-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe --skill api-testing-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe api-testing-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-testing-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe --skill api-testing-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe --path assets/skills/api-testing-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-testing-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe --skill api-testing-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/proffesor-for-testing/agentic-qe/tree/HEAD/assets/skills/api-testing-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch a provider breaking its contract after a release
- write 401 and 403 tests for protected endpoints
- reproduce a race condition on parallel inventory writes
- generate tests from an OpenAPI spec
- choose between contract and integration testing

## Example prompts
- validate the /orders contract against openapi.yaml and flag breaking changes
- generate tests for my REST API from openapi.yaml
- write an idempotency test for order creation with Idempotency-Key

# API Testing Patterns

<default_to_action>
When testing APIs or designing API test strategy:
1. IDENTIFY testing level: contract, integration, or component
2. TEST the contract, not implementation (consumer perspective)
3. VALIDATE auth, input, errors, idempotency, concurrency
4. AUTOMATE in CI/CD with schema validation
5. MONITOR production APIs for contract drift

**Quick Pattern Selection:**
- Microservices → Consumer-driven contracts (Pact)
- REST APIs → CRUD + pagination + filtering tests
- GraphQL → Query validation + complexity limits
- External deps → Mock with component testing
- Performance → Load test critical endpoints

**Critical Success Factors:**
- APIs are contracts - test from consumer perspective
- Always test error scenarios, not just happy paths
- Version your API tests to prevent breaking changes
</default_to_action>

## Quick Reference Card

### When to Use
- Testing REST or GraphQL APIs
- Validating microservice contracts
- Designing API test strategies
- Preventing breaking API changes

### Testing Levels
| Level | Purpose | Dependencies | Speed |
|-------|---------|--------------|-------|
| Contract | Provider-consumer agreement | None | Fast |
| Component | API in isolation | Mocked | Fast |
| Integration | Real dependencies | Database, services | Slower |

### Critical Test Scenarios
| Scenario | Must Test | Example |
|----------|----------|---------|
| Auth | 401/403 handling | Expired token, wrong user |
| Input | 400 validation | Missing fields, wrong types |
| Errors | 500 graceful handling | DB down, timeout |
| Idempotency | Duplicate prevention | Same idempotency key |
| Concurrency | Race conditions | Parallel checkout |
