# api-test-suite-generator

Scans your route definitions and generates API test suites with Jest, Vitest or Supertest. Useful when the endpoints exist but the tests do not.

## What it does

The skill walks your project, finds API route definitions in Express, Next.js, Fastify and others, then pulls request and response schemas out of them. Tests land in files grouped by resource. Each route gets a happy path plus checks on status codes, response shape and headers. Edge cases come along too: invalid bodies, missing tokens, a resource that does not exist.

The layout is fixed. `tests/setup.ts` boots the server on a random port and wipes the database before each test, `tests/fixtures/` holds test data, and `tests/helpers/api-client.ts` wraps Supertest with `Authorization: Bearer` handling. A generator script at `scripts/generate-api-tests.ts` builds the files from route descriptions. The examples assume Prisma, so the `prisma.$executeRaw` and `$disconnect` calls need rewriting if your project uses another ORM.

Install targets include Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. GitHub Copilot takes a different command, `gh skill install`. Generated tests are TypeScript, so a plain JS project means editing the output by hand.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill api-test-suite-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-test-suite-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-test-suite-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill api-test-suite-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-test-suite-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill api-test-suite-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-test-suite-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills api-test-suite-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-test-suite-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill api-test-suite-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path testing/api-test-suite-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-test-suite-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill api-test-suite-generator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- write integration tests for every Express endpoint
- cover 401, 404 and 400 responses
- set up fixtures and database seeding for tests
- boot a test server on a random port
- attach auth tokens to Supertest requests

## Example prompts
- generate API tests for the users routes
- create endpoint tests for /api/products
- build an integration test suite for the API with auth checks

description: Generates comprehensive API test suites using Jest, Vitest, or Supertest from Express, Next.js, Fastify, or other API routes. # API Test Suite Generator

Generate comprehensive API test suites automatically from your route definitions.

## Core Workflow

1. **Scan routes**: Find all API route definitions
2. **Analyze contracts**: Extract request/response schemas
3. **Generate tests**: Create test files for each resource
4. **Add assertions**: Status codes, response structure, headers
5. **Include edge cases**: Invalid inputs, auth, not found
6. **Setup fixtures**: Test data and database seeding

## Test Structure

```
├── setup.ts              # Global test setup
├── fixtures/             # Test data
│   ├── users.ts
│   └── products.ts
├── integration/          # API integration tests
│   └── auth.test.ts
└── helpers/              # Test utilities
    ├── api-client.ts
    └── auth.ts
```

## Test Setup (Vitest/Jest)

```typescript
// tests/setup.ts
import { beforeAll, afterAll, beforeEach, afterEach } from "vitest";
import { createServer } from "../src/server";
import { prisma } from "../src/db";
let server: ReturnType<typeof createServer>;
beforeAll(async () => {
  server = await createServer();
  await server.listen({ port: 0 }); // Random port
  process.env.TEST_BASE_URL = `http://localhost:${server.address().port}`;
});
afterAll(async () => {
  await server.close();
  await prisma.$disconnect();
});
beforeEach(async () => {
  // Clean database before each test
  await prisma.$executeRaw`TRUNCATE TABLE users CASCADE`;
});
afterEach(async () => {
  // Cleanup after each test
});
export { server };
```

## API Test Client

```typescript
// tests/helpers/api-client.ts
import supertest from "supertest";
const baseUrl = process.env.TEST_BASE_URL || "http://localhost:3000";
export const api = supertest(baseUrl);
export async function authenticatedApi(token?: string) {
  const authToken = token || (await getTestAuthToken());
  return {
    get: (url: string) => api.get(url).set("Authorization", `Bearer ${authToken}`),
    post: (url: string) => api.post(url).set("Authorization", `Bearer ${authToken}`),
    put: (url: string) => api.put(url).set("Authorization", `Bearer ${authToken}`),
````
