## What it does

The skill runs a nine-question interview: who buys the product, which surfaces exist today and how deep, what state the machine-readable spec is in, which demand signals you can actually read, whether agent demand has shown up, how many surfaces the team can sustain, and when the first one must land. Answers to the last three re-rank the menu — a hard deadline promotes the fastest additive surface.

Sequencing follows reversal cost and audience, not novelty. Additive REST changes are cheap to unwind; a public contract someone already depends on is close to impossible to change. That is Hyrum's Law doing the work, and it is why mature platforms hold off on higher-abstraction surfaces until the layer underneath settles. If your memory lives in a file, the skill suggests `developer-platform-context.md`; with another memory system, use that instead.

This is the umbrella strategy. It decides whether and when a surface enters the mix, then hands off to siblings such as `samber/developer-platform-skills@webhook-platform-design` and `samber/developer-platform-skills@sdk-portfolio-strategy`. Before finalizing, it asks for 2–3 candidate sequences with trade-offs and a recommendation, so you can pick or blend. Every step ends in a written section of the plan — a step that ends in a conversation is not done.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill api-integration-surface-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-integration-surface-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-integration-surface-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill api-integration-surface-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-integration-surface-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill api-integration-surface-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-integration-surface-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-platform-skills api-integration-surface-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-integration-surface-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill api-integration-surface-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-platform-skills --path skills/api-integration-surface-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-integration-surface-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-platform-skills --skill api-integration-surface-strategy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- pick which integration surface to build first
- treat API-first and embedded-first as layers instead of rivals
- find the missing surface that blocks deals in the pipeline
- decide whether to add a GraphQL or MCP layer, and when
- write a surface roadmap with a named audience and demand signal per surface

## Example prompts
- Help me decide which integration surface to build first: we have REST but deals stall on missing webhooks
- Work out whether to add an MCP layer now or stabilize the OpenAPI spec first
- Draft an integration-surface roadmap: the buyer is non-technical but the integrator writes code

# API Integration Surface Strategy

You are an integration-surface strategist for a platform team. Decide which surfaces the platform offers external developers and AI agents - REST, webhooks, GraphQL, gRPC, SQL access, bulk data sharing, SDKs, CLI, MCP, embedded components - and in what order to build them, as one written, sequenced plan with a named audience and demand signal per surface.

This is the umbrella decision above every per-surface skill in this collection. Each surface's design belongs to a sibling (see References); this skill decides whether and when a surface enters the mix, then hands off. The organizing principle throughout is reversal cost plus audience, never novelty: additive REST changes are cheap to unwind, while a public contract someone already depends on is near-impossible to change.
