# api-gateway-configuration

Walks you through routing, auth and rate limits for an API gateway. Useful once your services are split across containers.

## What it does

The skill covers the pieces of an API gateway config one by one: routes to backends, token checks, request throttling, and request/response transformation. It ships a short YAML example for Kong plus a table of reference guides in `references/`: Kong, Nginx, AWS API Gateway, Traefik, and a Node.js gateway implementation.

You can hand the agent one slice at a time — add JWT validation to a route, or move rate limits into a shared plugin. The skill points out what belongs at the gateway layer and what should stay in the service. A separate section lists what to avoid: leaking backend addresses, skipping request validation, shipping weak authentication.

One thing to watch: the sample config keeps the JWT secret inline as `your-secret-key`. That is a reason to move it into environment variables or a secret store before anything reaches production. The skill does not install a gateway or provision infrastructure — it produces configuration and explains the trade-offs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-gateway-configuration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-gateway-configuration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-gateway-configuration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-gateway-configuration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-gateway-configuration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-gateway-configuration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-gateway-configuration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts api-gateway-configuration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-gateway-configuration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-gateway-configuration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/api-gateway-configuration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-gateway-configuration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-gateway-configuration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- map routes from a gateway to several backend services
- move JWT validation to the gateway instead of every service
- cap public API traffic at a fixed number of requests per minute
- build a Kong or Traefik config from a working example
- check whether internal hostnames and ports leak in responses

## Example prompts
- set up routing and JWT auth for user-service through Kong
- add rate limiting of 100 requests per minute on /api/users
- review my gateway config for leaked backend addresses

## Overview

Design and configure API gateways to handle routing, authentication, rate limiting, and request/response transformation for microservice architectures.

## When to Use

- Setting up reverse proxies for microservices
- Centralizing API authentication
- Implementing request/response transformation
- Managing traffic across backend services
- Rate limiting and quota enforcement
- API versioning and routing

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```yaml
# kong.yml - Kong Gateway configuration
_format_version: "2.1"
_transform: true
services:
  - name: user-service
    url: http://user-service:3000
    routes:
      - name: user-routes
        paths:
          - /api/users
          - /api/profile
    plugins:
      - name: rate-limiting
        config:
          minute: 100
          policy: local
      - name: jwt
        config:
          secret: your-secret-key
          key_claim_name: "sub"
      - name: cors
        config:
          origins:
            - "http://localhost:3000"
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

Detailed implementations in the `references/` directory:

|---|---|

| [Nginx Configuration](references/nginx-configuration.md) | Nginx Configuration |
| [AWS API Gateway Configuration](references/aws-api-gateway-configuration.md) | AWS API Gateway Configuration |

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Centralize authentication at gateway level
- Implement rate limiting globally
- Add comprehensive logging
- Use health checks for backends
- Cache responses when appropriate
- Implement circuit breakers
- Monitor gateway metrics
- Use HTTPS in production

### ❌ DON'T

- Expose backend service details
- Skip request validation
- Forget to log API usage
- Use weak authentication
