## What it does

The skill activates when you ask to document an API, create an OpenAPI/Swagger spec, or mention API docs. It gets `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Grep` and `Glob`, so it can read your code, find handlers and write the spec file.

Inside you get the OpenAPI 3.0.3 layout, the fields each endpoint needs (`summary`, `operationId`, `tags`, `responses`), rules for shared schemas with `$ref`, string formats like `uuid` and `date-time`, `security` and `securitySchemes` blocks for bearer auth, plus a standard error schema and the common HTTP status codes. Two scripts ship with it: `python3 scripts/generate_openapi.py --name <resource-name> --output openapi.yaml` builds a spec from code, and `python3 scripts/validate_openapi.py --input openapi.yaml` checks one. Running them needs Python 3.

When the work finishes, the skill fires a `session-logger` hook in auto mode to record documentation activity. A starter spec sits in `references/openapi-template.yaml`, examples in `references/examples/`. If your project already generates specs some other way, both tools will write files — decide which one owns `openapi.yaml` before you run this.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill api-documenter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-documenter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-documenter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill api-documenter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-documenter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill api-documenter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-documenter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zhaono1/agent-playbook api-documenter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-documenter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill api-documenter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zhaono1/agent-playbook --path skills/api-documenter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-documenter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zhaono1/agent-playbook --skill api-documenter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/zhaono1/agent-playbook/tree/HEAD/skills/api-documenter/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an OpenAPI spec from existing route handlers
- document parameters and responses for every endpoint
- move shared schemas into `components` and link them with `$ref`
- describe bearer auth and error codes in the spec
- validate an `openapi.yaml` before publishing it

## Example prompts
- document the REST API in this project and produce an OpenAPI spec
- generate `openapi.yaml` for the users resource
- validate `openapi.yaml` and list the missing descriptions

# API Documenter

Specialist in creating comprehensive API documentation using OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.

## When This Skill Activates

Activates when you:
- Ask to document an API
- Create OpenAPI/Swagger specs
- Need API reference documentation
- Mention "API docs"

## OpenAPI Specification Structure

```yaml
openapi: 3.0.3
info:
  title: API Title
  version: 1.0.0
  description: API description
servers:
  - url: https://example.com/api/v1
paths:
  /users:
    get:
      summary: List users
      operationId: listUsers
      tags:
        - users
      parameters: []
      responses:
        '200':
          description: Successful response
          content:
            application/json:
              schema:
                type: array
                items:
                  $ref: '#/components/schemas/User'
components:
  schemas:
    User:
      type: object
      properties:
        id:
          type: string
        name:
          type: string
```

## Endpoint Documentation

For each endpoint, document:

### Required Fields
- **summary**: Brief description
- **operationId**: Unique identifier
- **description**: Detailed explanation
- **tags**: For grouping
- **responses**: All possible responses

### Recommended Fields
- **parameters**: All parameters with details
- **requestBody**: For POST/PUT/PATCH
- **security**: Authentication requirements
- **deprecated**: If applicable

### Example

```yaml
/users/{id}:
  get:
    summary: Get a user by ID
    operationId: getUserById
    description: Retrieves a single user by their unique identifier
    tags:
      - users
    parameters:
      - name: id
        in: path
        required: true
        schema:
          type: string
        description: The user ID
    responses:
      '200':
        description: User found
        content:
          application/json:
            schema:
              $ref: '#/components/schemas/User'
      '404':
        description: User not found
        content:
          application/json:
            schema:
              $ref: '#/components/schemas/Error'
```

## Schema Documentation

### Best Practices

1. **Use references** for shared schemas
2. **Add descriptions** to all properties
3. **Specify format** for strings (email, uuid, date-time)
