## What it does

This skill organizes developer documentation directly from OpenAPI files, GraphQL schemas, or codebase annotations. Instead of dumping raw schemas into an unreadable file, it structures content for developers who need working payloads, pagination details, and error response examples.

Execution begins with classification. The agent selects one primary mode: reference docs, a first-success quickstart, a workflow guide, an SDK manual, webhook guidance, or a migration update. To keep docs accurate, it inspects real project files, fixtures, and tests using tools like `Read`, `Glob`, and `Grep`.

Boundaries are enforced strictly. Designing resource shapes belongs to `api-design`, while release logs belong to `changelog-maintenance`. If contract details are missing from the repository, the skill outputs a concrete gaps checklist instead of inventing unverified API behavior.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill api-documentation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-documentation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill api-documentation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill api-documentation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills api-documentation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill api-documentation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/api-documentation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill api-documentation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/api-documentation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a quickstart guide for an API's first successful call
- compile grouped endpoint references from an OpenAPI specification
- document webhook signature verification, delivery retries, and payloads
- outline breaking changes and migration paths for an updated API surface
- build an evidence-backed gap list identifying documentation drift

## Example prompts
- Read the OpenAPI spec and write a quickstart guide for third-party integrators.
- Document our webhook verification and retry logic based on the test fixtures.
- Review the current endpoints and prepare a migration update for the v2 changes.

# API Documentation

Use this skill when the main job is **publishing or refreshing developer-facing API docs that help integrators reach first success, understand reference truth, and stay unblocked as the API evolves**.

`api-documentation` is the documentation-cluster anchor for:
- endpoint / schema reference docs
- quickstarts and first-success flows
- task-oriented integration guides
- SDK guides
- webhook delivery / verification docs
- developer-portal navigation and grouped reference surfaces
- migration updates attached to the docs surface

Read these support docs before choosing the mode or output packet:
- [references/documentation-modes-and-boundaries.md](../api-documentation--references/documentation-modes-and-boundaries.md)
- [references/output-packets-and-navigation.md](../api-documentation--references/output-packets-and-navigation.md)
- [references/example-and-reference-checklist.md](../api-documentation--references/example-and-reference-checklist.md)
- [references/publishing-and-drift-control.md](../api-documentation--references/publishing-and-drift-control.md)

## When to use this skill
- A team needs API reference, quickstarts, or portal pages that external developers, partners, or internal integrators can actually use.
- An OpenAPI or schema artifact already exists, but the docs need structure, examples, auth/setup guidance, error handling, or clearer navigation.
- Existing API docs drifted after auth, versioning, retry, pagination, webhook, or SDK changes.
- A public, partner, or internal API launch needs developer-facing guides, migration notes, or trustworthy examples.
- A large API surface needs grouping, selective publishing, or cleaner portal structure instead of one giant reference dump.

## When not to use this skill
- **The main job is designing resources, endpoint shape, schema rules, or versioning strategy** → use `api-design`.
- **The main job is writing internal specs, ADRs, runbooks, rollout docs, or system migration procedures** → use `technical-writing`.
- **The main job is end-user/product UI onboarding, screenshots, tutorials, or help-center docs** → use `technical-writing`.
