## What it does

This skill guides contract testing across microservices by focusing on request-response schemas and data types. It isolates consumer expectations from provider implementations, avoiding full end-to-end test overhead.

Reference materials cover Pact implementations, OpenAPI and JSON Schema validation, REST Assured for Java, and Postman setups. They also include workflows for sharing contracts via Pact Broker.

Contract tests must validate schema structure rather than business logic or hard-coded values. Relying on matchers prevents fragile CI builds while guarding backward compatibility.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-contract-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/api-contract-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/api-contract-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-contract-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/api-contract-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-contract-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/api-contract-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts api-contract-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/api-contract-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-contract-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/api-contract-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/api-contract-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill api-contract-testing -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- verify API contracts between microservices
- prevent breaking changes in OpenAPI and Swagger specifications
- share consumer contracts using Pact Broker
- catch API contract violations during CI builds

## Example prompts
- create a Pact contract test for OrderService and UserService
- set up OpenAPI schema validation for the user endpoint
- check backward compatibility of this API payload in CI

## Overview

Contract testing verifies that APIs honor their contracts between consumers and providers. It ensures that service changes don't break dependent consumers without requiring full integration tests. Contract tests validate request/response formats, data types, and API behavior independently.

## When to Use

- Testing microservices communication
- Preventing breaking API changes
- Validating API versioning
- Testing consumer-provider contracts
- Ensuring backward compatibility
- Validating OpenAPI/Swagger specifications
- Testing third-party API integrations
- Catching contract violations in CI

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```typescript
// tests/pact/user-service.pact.test.ts
import { PactV3, MatchersV3 } from "@pact-foundation/pact";
import { UserService } from "../../src/services/UserService";
const { like, eachLike, iso8601DateTimeWithMillis } = MatchersV3;
const provider = new PactV3({
  consumer: "OrderService",
  provider: "UserService",
  port: 1234,
  dir: "./pacts",
});
describe("User Service Contract", () => {
  const userService = new UserService("http://localhost:1234");
  describe("GET /users/:id", () => {
    test("returns user when found", async () => {
      await provider
        .given("user with ID 123 exists")
        .uponReceiving("a request for user 123")
        .withRequest({
          method: "GET",
          path: "/users/123",
          headers: {
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Test contracts from consumer perspective
- Use matchers for flexible matching
- Validate schema structure, not specific values
- Version your contracts
- Test error responses
- Use Pact broker for contract sharing
- Run contract tests in CI
- Test backward compatibility

### ❌ DON'T

- Test business logic in contract tests
- Hard-code specific values in contracts
