# antithesis-debug

Executes bash scripts inside an Antithesis run at exact moments using the snouty CLI. Helps debug failed properties, inspect container files, and attach gdb without a browser.

## What it does

The skill teaches your coding agent how to run commands inside Antithesis virtual environments using `snouty runs exec`. Each invocation branches the multiverse, while repeating calls from the identical moment reproduces the exact state. It is built for process inspection, gathering on-disk evidence, and attaching `gdb`.

A command requires an active session showing `in_progress:ready`. Executing scripts on a live run can trigger system assertions and produce false-positive bugs, so starting a dedicated session via `snouty debug` is safer for deep investigation. Rewarming a cold moment in a new session takes between 2 and 20 minutes.

You need the `snouty` CLI version 0.8.0 or newer and an Antithesis tenant on release 64.0 or above. Pass negative `input-hash` numbers directly without `--`. Adding `--` makes the CLI treat trailing flags as positional arguments and breaks the command.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add antithesishq/antithesis-skills --skill antithesis-debug -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/antithesis-debug/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/antithesis-debug/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add antithesishq/antithesis-skills --skill antithesis-debug -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/antithesis-debug/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add antithesishq/antithesis-skills --skill antithesis-debug -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/antithesis-debug/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install antithesishq/antithesis-skills antithesis-debug
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/antithesis-debug/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add antithesishq/antithesis-skills --skill antithesis-debug -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/antithesishq/antithesis-skills --path antithesis-debug
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/antithesis-debug/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add antithesishq/antithesis-skills --skill antithesis-debug -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/antithesishq/antithesis-skills/tree/HEAD/antithesis-debug/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run bash diagnostic scripts inside Antithesis containers from the terminal
- inspect container filesystems and runtime processes at an exact moment
- reproduce a failed property by branching from a specific virtual time
- attach gdb and collect forensic state without using a web browser

## Example prompts
- Inspect the container filesystem for Antithesis run 4f8d80b at the failure moment
- Start a snouty debug session for this failed property and run ps aux in the container
- Find the input-hash and vtime for the failing assertion and execute diagnostic commands

# Antithesis Debug

**Skill version:** `2026-10-21 4f8d80b`

Execute a bash script at a moment in a run. Each call branches the multiverse and repeated calls from the same moment reproduce. Can use a currently running run or an active MVD session.

## When to use this skill

- The user gives you Antithesis debugging-session run ID or URL
- The user asks you to debug or investigate a failing property, bug, or any result from a past run
- The user makes a request to inspect container filesystem, runtime state, or events inside Antithesis
- Triage suggested this skill because logs alone haven't explained a failure

## Failed property warning

Commands run with `runs exec` on a live run can trigger a run's assertions, which will result in a failing property that looks exactly like a real bug.

Use a debugging session if you want to avoid these kinds of false positives.
Preference using a currently running run for speed, ease of use, and less core hours for commands you do not think will cause this problem.

## Prerequisites

- DO NOT PROCEED if `snouty` is not installed. See `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/antithesishq/snouty/refs/heads/main/README.md` for installation options.
- DO NOT PROCEED if `snouty` is older than 0.8.0, the first release where `runs exec` is stable. Use `snouty --version` to find the version. Use `snouty update` to update.
- You must have a session from a live run or MVD session to use this command. See get a live session first for more info.
- You must be logged into an Antithesis tenant from snouty. Run `snouty doctor` to confirm. Ask your user to log you in or use an API key if you are not logged in.

## Get a live session first

- `exec` needs a live session. A session can either be tied to a run or MVD session. In snouty both runs and debugging sessions show as runs.
- A run holds one while it runs, and for a short
  time after it ends. It will work a few minutes after completion but not hours.
- To see if a run has an active session use:
```
