## What it does

The skill moves through four phases: triage, communication, mitigation and postmortem. During triage it helps assign a SEV1–SEV4 level, list affected systems and users, and hand out roles such as incident commander, comms lead and responders. Then it drafts internal and customer messages, and once the incident is resolved it assembles the review document.

Three modes drive it: `/incident-response new [description]` opens an incident, `/incident-response update [status]` writes an update, `/incident-response postmortem` builds the review from collected data. Name no mode and the skill asks which phase you are in. The postmortem template covers a timeline, a root cause section with the five whys, and an action table with owners and priorities.

Connect monitoring, incident management or chat and the skill pulls alert metrics, opens an incident in PagerDuty or Opsgenie, and posts updates to a channel. Without those connectors it still runs — you just type the details in yourself. The docs advise starting to write right away instead of waiting for the full picture.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill incident-response -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/incident-response/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/incident-response/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill incident-response -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/incident-response/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill incident-response -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/incident-response/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins incident-response
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/incident-response/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill incident-response -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --path engineering/skills/incident-response
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/incident-response/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins --skill incident-response -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- assign a severity level from SEV1 to SEV4
- split incident roles across the response team
- draft a status update for the internal channel
- keep a running timeline while the incident is open
- write a blameless postmortem with owned action items

## Example prompts
- We have an incident: checkout is down, help me triage it
- Write a status update for the current incident
- Generate a postmortem for this incident with a five whys analysis

Manage an incident from detection through postmortem.

## Usage

```
/incident-response $ARGUMENTS
```

## Modes

```
/incident-response new [description]     # Start a new incident
/incident-response update [status]       # Post a status update
/incident-response postmortem            # Generate postmortem from incident data
```

If no mode is specified, ask what phase the incident is in.
