## What it does

The skill calls the `/res/v1/chat/completions` endpoint and returns grounded responses with source attribution. With `enable_research=true`, the agent runs up to five search iterations, gathers context, and delivers a synthesized answer with built-in citations; without it, a single search delivers a faster result. Supports both streaming and blocking modes.

Requires a Brave Search API key and an Answers subscription, available through the api-dashboard.search.brave.com dashboard. The skill is compatible with the OpenAI SDK via `base_url`, letting you integrate it without changing client code. Research mode requires streaming (`stream=true`), and citations in single-search mode are enabled with `enable_citations=true`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill answers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/answers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/answers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill answers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/answers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill answers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/answers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install brave/brave-search-skills answers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/answers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill answers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/brave/brave-search-skills --path skills/answers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/answers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill answers -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/brave/brave-search-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/answers/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- get a factual answer with source citations
- run multi-step research through several search queries
- connect Brave Search API to an agent via OpenAI-compatible interface
- configure search depth and token limits for the response

## Example prompts
- Find recent breakthroughs in fusion energy with citations
- Compare quantum computing approaches — enable research mode
- How does the James Webb Space Telescope work — give a short answer

# Answers — AI Grounding

> **Requires API Key**: Get one at https://api.search.brave.com
>
> **Plan**: Included in the **Answers** plan. See https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/app/subscriptions/subscribe

## When to Use

| Use Case | Skill | Why |
|--|--|--|
| Quick factual answer (raw context) | `llm-context` | Single search, returns raw context for YOUR LLM |
| Fast AI answer with citations | **`answers`** (single-search) | streaming, citations |
| Thorough multi-search deep research | **`answers`** (research mode) | Iterative deep research, synthesized cited answer |

**This endpoint** (`/res/v1/chat/completions`) supports two modes:
- **Single-search** (default): Fast AI-grounded answer from a single search. Supports `enable_citations`.
- **Research** (`enable_research=true`): Multi-iteration deep research with progress events and synthesized cited answer.

## Quick Start (cURL)

### Blocking (Single-Search)
```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/chat/completions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "X-Subscription-Token: ${BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY}" \
  -d '{
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "How does the James Webb Space Telescope work?"}],
    "stream": false
  }'
```

### Streaming with Citations (Single-Search)
```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/chat/completions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "X-Subscription-Token: ${BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY}" \
  -d '{
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "What are recent breakthroughs in fusion energy?"}],
    "stream": true,
    "enable_citations": true
  }'
```

### Research Mode
```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/chat/completions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "X-Subscription-Token: ${BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY}" \
  -d '{
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Compare quantum computing approaches"}],
    "stream": true,
    "enable_research": true,
    "research_maximum_number_of_iterations": 3,
    "research_maximum_number_of_seconds": 120
  }'
```

## Endpoint

```http
POST https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/chat/completions
```

**Authentication**: `X-Subscription-Token: <API_KEY>` header (or `Authorization: Bearer <API_KEY>`)

**SDK Compatible**: Works with OpenAI SDK via `base_url="https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1"`

## Two Modes

| Feature | Single-Search (default) | Research (`enable_research=true`) |
|--|--|--|
| Speed | Fast | Slow |
| Searches | 1 | Multiple (iterative) |
| Streaming | Optional (`stream=true/false`) | **Required** (`stream=true`) |
| Citations | `enable_citations=true` (streaming only) | Built-in (in `<answer>` tag) |
| Progress events | No | Yes (`<progress>` tags) |
| Blocking response | Yes (`stream=false`) | No |
