## What it does

The skill provides reference workflows and Python patterns for identifying abnormal records across tabular and time-series datasets. It handles point, contextual, collective, and novel anomaly patterns. Supported techniques cover statistical scoring with Z-score and IQR, distance-based neighbors such as LOF, Isolation Forest, Elliptic Envelope, DBSCAN, and deep learning autoencoders.

Included implementations rely directly on `pandas`, `scipy`, `scikit-learn`, and `matplotlib`. The generated scripts standardize feature vectors with `StandardScaler`, calculate outlier metrics, and render comparison distributions. Without `scikit-learn` in your Python environment, executing the forest and neighbor estimators will immediately fail.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill anomaly-detection -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/anomaly-detection/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/anomaly-detection/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill anomaly-detection -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/anomaly-detection/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

## When to use it
- detect fraudulent transactions in payment data
- flag network intrusions and server failures
- spot defective items during manufacturing quality checks
- filter abnormal telemetry readings from industrial IoT sensors

## Example prompts
- Inspect `metrics.csv` for outliers using Isolation Forest and output anomaly scores
- Apply Z-score and IQR thresholds to filter anomalous sensor events
- Build a comparison plot between Local Outlier Factor and Elliptic Envelope on this dataset

# Anomaly Detection

## Overview

Anomaly detection identifies unusual patterns, outliers, and anomalies in data that deviate significantly from normal behavior, enabling fraud detection and system monitoring.

## When to Use

- Detecting fraudulent transactions or suspicious activity in financial data
- Identifying system failures, network intrusions, or security breaches
- Monitoring manufacturing quality and identifying defective products
- Finding unusual patterns in healthcare data or patient vital signs
- Detecting abnormal sensor readings in IoT or industrial systems
- Identifying outliers in customer behavior for targeted intervention

## Detection Methods

- **Statistical**: Z-score, IQR, modified Z-score
- **Distance-based**: K-nearest neighbors, Local Outlier Factor
- **Isolation**: Isolation Forest
- **Density-based**: DBSCAN
- **Deep Learning**: Autoencoders, GANs

## Anomaly Types

- **Point Anomalies**: Single unusual records
- **Contextual**: Unusual in specific context
- **Collective**: Unusual patterns in sequences
- **Novel Classes**: Completely new patterns

## Implementation with Python

```python
import pandas as pd
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import seaborn as sns
from sklearn.preprocessing import StandardScaler
from sklearn.ensemble import IsolationForest
from sklearn.neighbors import LocalOutlierFactor
from sklearn.covariance import EllipticEnvelope
