# android-permissions-security

Audits an Android project for permission and IPC holes: weak custom permissions, spoofable caller checks, over-broad URI grants. Useful when reviewing AndroidManifest.xml.

## What it does

The skill walks an audit table where each vulnerability area maps to a search pattern, a risk and a fix. A weak `protectionLevel` in the manifest, a provider with `pathPrefix="/"`, caller checks that read `intent.getStringExtra("calling_package")` — each gets a concrete replacement.

Custom permissions and protection levels get their own section. For partner apps it covers `signature|knownSigner` with `android:knownCerts`, and it advises against `normal` or `dangerous` for restricting access to your own components. Caller verification moves from trusting intent extras to `Binder.getCallingUid()` plus `pm.hasSigningCertificate()`.

For the code samples to compile, the app-level `build.gradle` needs `androidx.core:core-ktx` and `androidx.activity:activity-ktx` (or `androidx.fragment:fragment-ktx`) — `ContextCompat` and `ActivityResultContracts` come from there. `knownSigner` requires `compileSdk` and `targetSdk` at 31 or higher, and `BroadcastOptions.setShareIdentityEnabled` needs 34. On an older SDK some of the advice will not build, so bump the versions first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill android-permissions-security -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/android-permissions-security/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/android-permissions-security/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill android-permissions-security -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/android-permissions-security/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill android-permissions-security -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/android-permissions-security/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install android/skills android-permissions-security
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/android-permissions-security/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill android-permissions-security -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/android/skills --path security/android-permissions-security
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/android-permissions-security/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add android/skills --skill android-permissions-security -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/android/skills/tree/HEAD/security/android-permissions-security/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- flag manifest permissions with a weak `protectionLevel`
- split provider access into `readPermission` and `writePermission`
- drop caller checks that read a package name from intent extras
- fix the request order for background location on Android 11+
- move image picking to Photo Picker and drop storage permissions

## Example prompts
- audit my `AndroidManifest.xml` for weak permissions and tell me what to fix
- replace the `calling_package` extra check with `Binder.getCallingUid()`
- review my runtime permission flow for permanent denial handling

Guidelines for auditing permission vulnerabilities, enforcing least privilege,
securing IPC boundaries, and handling runtime permissions across the Android
ecosystem.

## Glossary

- **Runtime Permission:** Dangerous permission (e.g., Camera, Location) that must be granted by the user at runtime on Android 6.0+ (API 23+).
- **Custom Permission:** A permission defined by an app (`<permission>`) to restrict access to its exported components.
- **Protection Level:** Attribute defining how the OS grants the permission (`normal`, `dangerous`, `signature`, `knownSigner`).
- **knownSigner:** Protection flag (API 31+) granting signature-level access to partner apps matching trusted certificate digests.
- **SigningInfo:** Object (API 28+) providing signing history and multiple signer certificates for an application.
- **Binder Calling Identity:** Reliable UID representing the calling process obtained using `Binder.getCallingUid()`.
- **URI Permission:** Temporary, granular access granted to a content URI using `grantUriPermissions` and intent flags.

## Prerequisites

- Add `androidx.core:core-ktx` and `androidx.activity:activity-ktx` (or `androidx.fragment:fragment-ktx`) dependencies to the app-level `build.gradle` file for `ContextCompat` and `ActivityResultContracts`.
- For `knownSigner` partner permissions (`android:knownCerts`), ensure the project `compileSdk` and `targetSdk` are at least 31 (Android 12).
- For broadcast identity sharing (`BroadcastOptions.setShareIdentityEnabled`), ensure `compileSdk` and `targetSdk` are at least 34 (Android 14).
