## What it does

The skill lays out Material Design 3 rules for Android apps. It covers Material You and theming, navigation, and ships Kotlin snippets for Jetpack Compose plus XML examples for themes. Your agent reads these rules when you ask it to build a screen, set up a theme, or sort out dynamic color.

Dynamic color from the user's wallpaper is the primary theming strategy here, with a static fallback for devices below Android 12. Colors are referenced by role: `primary`, `onPrimary`, `surface`, `errorContainer` and so on. Hardcoded hex values in components are called an anti-pattern, so it is worth grepping your code for leftover `Color(0xFF...)` calls.

Navigation is split by window size: a bottom bar for phones, a rail for tablets and foldables, a drawer for deeper hierarchies. Labels on the bottom bar are mandatory, and the selected icon should be the filled variant. The text cuts off inside the Navigation Drawer section, so not every navigation scenario is covered.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ehmo/platform-design-skills --skill android-design-guidelines -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add ehmo/platform-design-skills --skill android -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/android/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/android/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ehmo/platform-design-skills --skill android -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/android/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ehmo/platform-design-skills --skill android -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/android/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ehmo/platform-design-skills android
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/android/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ehmo/platform-design-skills --skill android -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ehmo/platform-design-skills --path skills/android
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/android/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ehmo/platform-design-skills --skill android -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ehmo/platform-design-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/android/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up a Compose theme with dynamic color and a fallback
- map colors to roles instead of hardcoded hex
- pick a navigation pattern for the window size
- support light and dark themes without pure black
- check that colors hold up against different wallpapers

## Example prompts
- Build a settings screen in Compose using MaterialTheme colors, no hardcoded values
- Check the app theme: is there a fallback for devices below Android 12?
- Add a bottom navigation bar with 4 destinations, labels and filled icons

# Android Platform Design Guidelines — Material Design 3

## 1. Material You & Theming [CRITICAL]

### 1.1 Dynamic Color

Enable dynamic color derived from the user's wallpaper. Dynamic color is the default on Android 12+ and should be the primary theming strategy.

```kotlin
// Compose: Dynamic color theme
@Composable
fun AppTheme(
    darkTheme: Boolean = isSystemInDarkTheme(),
    dynamicColor: Boolean = true,
    content: @Composable () -> Unit
) {
    val colorScheme = when {
        dynamicColor && Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.S -> {
            val context = LocalContext.current
            if (darkTheme) dynamicDarkColorScheme(context)
            else dynamicLightColorScheme(context)
        }
        darkTheme -> darkColorScheme()
        else -> lightColorScheme()
    }
    MaterialTheme(
        colorScheme = colorScheme,
        typography = AppTypography,
        content = content
    )
}
```

```xml
<!-- XML: Dynamic color in themes.xml -->
<style name="Theme.App" parent="Theme.Material3.DayNight.NoActionBar">
    <item name="dynamicColorThemeOverlay">@style/ThemeOverlay.Material3.DynamicColors.DayNight</item>
</style>
```

**Rules:**
- R1.1: Always provide a fallback static color scheme for devices below Android 12.
- R1.2: Never hardcode color hex values in components. Always reference color roles from the theme.
- R1.3: Test with at least 3 different wallpapers to verify dynamic color harmony.

### 1.2 Color Roles

Material 3 defines a structured set of color roles. Use them semantically, not aesthetically.

| Role | Usage | On-Role |
|------|-------|---------|
| `primary` | Key actions, active states, FAB | `onPrimary` |
| `primaryContainer` | Less prominent primary elements | `onPrimaryContainer` |
| `secondary` | Supporting UI, filter chips | `onSecondary` |
| `secondaryContainer` | Navigation bar active indicator | `onSecondaryContainer` |
| `tertiary` | Accent, contrast, complementary | `onTertiary` |
| `tertiaryContainer` | Input fields, less prominent accents | `onTertiaryContainer` |
| `surface` | Backgrounds, cards, sheets | `onSurface` |
| `surfaceVariant` | Decorative elements, dividers | `onSurfaceVariant` |
| `error` | Error states, destructive actions | `onError` |
