# analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities

Parses CycloneDX and SPDX SBOM files, matches components against the NVD CVE database through the NVD 2.0 API and builds a dependency graph. Useful when you need to size up third-party library risk.

## What it does

The skill reads an SBOM in CycloneDX JSON (v1.4+) or SPDX JSON (v2.3+), pulls out components with their PURL and CPE identifiers, and looks up known vulnerabilities in NVD through the 2.0 API. It then builds a directed dependency graph with networkx and scores risk: the highest CVSS across a component's CVEs, adjusted by how many packages depend on it. Levels are plain — CRITICAL from 9.0, HIGH from 7.0, MEDIUM from 4.0, everything else LOW.

Transitive dependencies get their own pass. A flaw four levels deep is still a risk, it is just harder to fix. The graph shows how many components depend on a package, how close it sits to the entry point, and how many paths run through it. Grype cross-validation scans the same SBOM independently so you can compare findings.

You need Python 3.9+ with requests, networkx and packaging, plus an NVD API key. Without a key the limit is 5 requests per 30 seconds; with one it is 50. On a large SBOM that gap shows up fast, so get the key up front. Syft helps if you still have to generate the SBOM. This is not for scanning live systems — the work happens on a file, not a running host.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/analyzing-sbom-for-supply-chain-vulnerabilities/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- parse a vendor SBOM and surface vulnerable components
- map CycloneDX or SPDX packages to CVE records in NVD
- build a dependency graph and trace transitive paths to a vulnerability
- score component risk by how many packages depend on it
- cross-check your findings against an independent grype scan

## Example prompts
- analyze sbom-cyclonedx.json and list components with critical CVEs
- build a dependency graph from this SPDX file and find transitive vulnerabilities
- score the SBOM risk and compare it with grype results

# Analyzing SBOM for Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

## When to Use

- A new regulatory requirement (EO 14028, EU CRA) mandates SBOM analysis for software deliveries
- Security team needs to assess third-party risk by scanning vendor-provided SBOMs
- CI/CD pipeline requires automated vulnerability checks against generated SBOMs
- Incident response needs to determine if a newly disclosed CVE affects deployed software
- Procurement team requires supply chain risk assessment for a software acquisition

**Do not use** for runtime vulnerability scanning of live systems; use container scanning tools (Trivy, Grype CLI) or host-based vulnerability scanners (Nessus, Qualys) instead.

## Prerequisites

- SBOM file in CycloneDX JSON (v1.4+) or SPDX JSON (v2.3+) format
