## What it does

The skill analyzes Microsoft Outlook PST and OST files with `libpff` and `pffexport`. It extracts message content, transport headers, attachments, deleted items, and MAPI metadata. Header data supports message-route tracing, while folder and time fields help reconstruct communication patterns.

The included commands export all items, email messages, or recovered data with `pffexport`; `pffinfo` reports PST file details. A Python workflow uses `pypff` or `libratom` and can walk folders while collecting message and attachment data. You need `libpff/pffexport`, Python 3.8+, and enough disk space for extracted content. Check the parser and storage before processing an evidence file.

Commercial options named by the skill include MailXaminer, Forensic Email Collector, and SysTools PST Forensics. Microsoft Outlook is listed as optional for native PST access.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-outlook-pst-for-email-forensics -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- extract messages from a PST file
- recover deleted Outlook items
- trace routing through email headers
- catalog attachments for analysis
- reconstruct communication patterns from folders

## Example prompts
- Analyze `evidence.pst` and extract its messages, headers, attachments, and deleted items.
- Run `pffexport -m recovered evidence.pst -t recovered_items`, then summarize the recovered data.
- Use `pffinfo evidence.pst` and report the PST details before reviewing its messages and attachments.

# Analyzing Outlook PST for Email Forensics

## Overview

Microsoft Outlook PST (Personal Storage Table) and OST (Offline Storage Table) files are critical evidence sources in digital forensics investigations. PST files store email messages, calendar events, contacts, tasks, and notes in a proprietary binary format based on the MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) property system. Forensic analysis of these files enables recovery of deleted emails (from the Recoverable Items folder), extraction of email headers for tracing message routes, analysis of attachments for malware or exfiltrated data, and reconstruction of communication patterns. Modern PST files use Unicode format with 4KB pages and can grow up to 50GB, while legacy ANSI format is limited to 2GB.

## When to Use

- When investigating security incidents that require analyzing outlook pst for email forensics
- When building detection rules or threat hunting queries for this domain
- When SOC analysts need structured procedures for this analysis type
- When validating security monitoring coverage for related attack techniques

## Prerequisites

- libpff/pffexport (open-source PST parser)
- Python 3.8+ with pypff or libratom libraries
- MailXaminer, Forensic Email Collector, or SysTools PST Forensics (commercial)
- Microsoft Outlook (optional, for native PST access)
