## What it does

The skill hands your agent a procedure for network flow analysis. It decodes NetFlow v9 and IPFIX records with the Python `netflow` library, builds a traffic baseline, then applies statistics to flows with unusual byte counts, connection durations and timing.

Inside you get a set of steps plus `scripts/agent.py`. Install the dependency with `pip install netflow`, collect data from routers or the built-in collector `python -m netflow.collector -p 9995`, parse it through `netflow.parse_packet()`, and check four patterns: port scanning, data exfiltration, C2 beaconing, volumetric spikes. The run ends with a prioritized findings report.

Python 3.8+ is required, along with authorization for any testing. The skill assumes a lab or test environment, so pointing it at a production network without written approval is a bad idea — clear the scope first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-network-flow-data-with-netflow -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- parse a NetFlow v9 dump and pull addresses and byte counts per flow
- catch port scanning from one source to many destinations
- spot high-byte outbound flows to unusual destinations
- detect C2 beaconing from evenly spaced connection intervals
- compare current traffic against a baseline and get a prioritized report

## Example prompts
- parse captured_flows.json and show me the flows with abnormal byte counts
- check these NetFlow records for port scanning patterns
- build a traffic baseline and find periodic connections

# Analyzing Network Flow Data with Netflow

## When to Use

- When investigating security incidents that require analyzing network flow data with netflow
- When building detection rules or threat hunting queries for this domain
- When SOC analysts need structured procedures for this analysis type
- When validating security monitoring coverage for related attack techniques

## Prerequisites

- Familiarity with network security concepts and tools
- Access to a test or lab environment for safe execution
- Python 3.8+ with required dependencies installed
- Appropriate authorization for any testing activities

## Instructions

1. Install dependencies: `pip install netflow`
2. Collect NetFlow/IPFIX data from routers or use the built-in collector: `python -m netflow.collector -p 9995`
3. Parse captured flow data using `netflow.parse_packet()`.
4. Analyze flows for:
   - Port scanning: single source to many destinations on same port
   - Data exfiltration: high byte-count outbound flows to unusual destinations
   - C2 beaconing: periodic connections with consistent intervals
   - Volumetric anomalies: traffic spikes beyond baseline thresholds
5. Generate a prioritized findings report.

```bash
python scripts/agent.py --flow-file captured_flows.json --output netflow_report.json
```

## Examples

### Parse NetFlow v9 Packet
```python
import netflow
data, _ = netflow.parse_packet(raw_bytes, templates={})
for flow in data.flows:
    print(flow.IPV4_SRC_ADDR, flow.IPV4_DST_ADDR, flow.IN_BYTES)
```
