## What it does

This skill performs static triage on Android APKs without running them. It relies on `androguard` to inspect the manifest, list components such as activities and services, flag dangerous permission combinations, and detect reflection, telephony, or crypto API calls. Resource decompilation is handled by `apktool`, while `jadx` can optionally recover Java source code.

The workflow extracts hardcoded URLs, IP addresses, and command-and-control indicators from strings. It outputs a JSON report with a risk score and MITRE ATT&CK mobile mappings. Running analysis on suspicious binaries without an isolated sandbox or VM poses operational risks, so setting up an isolated environment is an immediate requirement. You also need Python 3.9+ and the `androguard` package.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill analyzing-android-malware-with-apktool -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- parse APK manifests to detect dangerous permission combinations
- identify dynamic code loading and reflection API calls
- extract hardcoded C2 indicators, URLs, and IP addresses from strings
- generate structured JSON risk reports mapped to MITRE ATT&CK

## Example prompts
- Run static analysis on sample.apk using androguard and apktool
- Check suspicious.apk for dynamic code loading patterns via DexClassLoader and Runtime.exec
- Generate a JSON triage report for sample.apk with MITRE ATT&CK mobile mappings

# Analyzing Android Malware with Apktool

## Overview

Android malware distributed as APK files can be statically analyzed to extract permissions, activities, services, broadcast receivers, and suspicious API calls without executing the sample. This skill uses androguard for programmatic APK analysis, identifying dangerous permission combinations, obfuscated code patterns, dynamic code loading, reflection-based API calls, and network communication indicators.

## When to Use

- When investigating security incidents that require analyzing android malware with apktool
- When building detection rules or threat hunting queries for this domain
- When SOC analysts need structured procedures for this analysis type
- When validating security monitoring coverage for related attack techniques

## Prerequisites

- Python 3.9+ with `androguard`
- apktool (for resource decompilation)
- jadx (for Java source recovery, optional)
- Isolated analysis environment (VM or sandbox)
- Sample APK files for analysis

## Steps

1. Parse APK with androguard to extract manifest metadata
2. Enumerate requested permissions and flag dangerous combinations
3. List activities, services, receivers, and providers from manifest
4. Scan for suspicious API calls (reflection, crypto, SMS, telephony)
5. Detect dynamic code loading patterns (DexClassLoader, Runtime.exec)
6. Extract hardcoded URLs, IPs, and C2 indicators from strings
7. Generate risk assessment report with MITRE ATT&CK mobile mappings

## Expected Output
