## What it does

The skill covers the geospatial side of AWS: maps (interactive MapLibre tiles or static images), forward and reverse geocoding, route and service-area calculation, text and nearby place search, address autocomplete, geofences and trackers. Your agent gets guidance on picking the right operation and on the mistakes people make most often.

It is split by API group: Places, Maps, Routes, Geofences & Trackers, API Keys. For web work it points at the bundled `@aws/amazon-location-client`; for React and build-tool setups, the modular `@aws-sdk/client-geo-*` packages. Maps, Places and Routes can run resourceless, while geofencing and tracking always need pre-created resources. Auth follows the same split: API key for maps, places and routes, Cognito for geofences and trackers.

There is a list of common mistakes. In autocomplete results you display `Address.Label`, not `Title`, and MapLibre maps are initialised with a direct style URL rather than a `GetStyleDescriptor` call. If your project already runs on Google Maps, Mapbox or Leaflet with OSM, this skill is the wrong fit — it is built around AWS.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill amazon-location-service -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/amazon-location-service/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/amazon-location-service/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill amazon-location-service -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/amazon-location-service/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill amazon-location-service -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/amazon-location-service/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cline/skills amazon-location-service
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/amazon-location-service/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill amazon-location-service -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cline/skills --path skills/amazon-location-service
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/amazon-location-service/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill amazon-location-service -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cline/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/amazon-location-service/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- render an interactive MapLibre map with zoom and markers
- turn a typed address into coordinates and back
- estimate travel time across several origins and destinations
- find businesses near a coordinate with opening hours
- fire events when a device enters or leaves a geofence

## Example prompts
- Add an Amazon Location map to the order page using the Standard style
- Build address autocomplete in the checkout form with geo-places and show Address.Label
- Calculate the route and travel time from our warehouse to the customer address

name: amazon-location-service
description: Integrates Amazon Location Service APIs for AWS applications. Use this skill when users want to add maps (interactive MapLibre or static images); geocode addresses to coordinates or reverse geocode coordinates to addresses; calculate routes, travel times, or service areas; find places and businesses through text search, nearby search, or autocomplete suggestions; retrieve detailed place information including hours, contacts, and addresses; monitor geographical boundaries with geofences; or track device locations. Covers authentication, SDK integration, and all Amazon Location Service capabilities.

## Overview

Amazon Location Service provides geospatial APIs for maps, geocoding, routing, places search, geofencing, and tracking. Prefer the bundled JavaScript client (@aws/amazon-location-client) for web development and use resourceless API operations to avoid managing AWS resources.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:

- Building location-aware web or mobile applications
- Working with Amazon Location Service projects
- Implementing maps, geocoding, routing, or places search
- Adding geofencing or device tracking functionality
- Integrating geospatial features into AWS applications

Do NOT use this skill for:

- Google Maps, Mapbox, or Leaflet-with-OSM projects (unless migrating to Amazon Location)
- Generic GIS operations without AWS context
- Non-AWS geospatial services

## Amazon Location Service API Overview

**Places** (SDK: geo-places, JS: @aws-sdk/client-geo-places)

- Geocode (Forward/Reverse): Convert addresses to coordinates and vice versa
- Search (Text/Nearby): Find points of interest with contact and hours info
- Autocomplete: Predict addresses based on user input
- Suggest: Predict places and points of interest based on partial or misspelled user input
- Get Place: Retrieve place details by place ID

**Maps** (SDK: geo-maps, JS: @aws-sdk/client-geo-maps)

- Dynamic Maps: Interactive maps using tiles with [MapLibre](https://maplibre.org/) rendering
- Static Maps: Pre-rendered, non-interactive map images, good for including an image into a web page, or for thumbnail images

**Routes** (SDK: geo-routes, JS: @aws-sdk/client-geo-routes)

- Route calculation with traffic and distance estimation
- Service area/isoline creation
- Matrix calculations for multiple origins/destinations
- GPS trace alignment to road segments
