## What it does

This skill guides agents through Amazon Bedrock architecture across its 5 distinct endpoints. It covers Converse API and `bedrock-mantle` invocation, Knowledge Bases setup with chunking strategies, prompt caching, and AgentCore Payments microtransactions via x402.

Classic Bedrock Agents is in maintenance mode, so this skill directs new agent builds toward AgentCore Harness. It requires AWS CLI v2 and `boto3 ≥ 1.34.x`. You must set `maxTokens` explicitly in every request, because omitting it defaults to the model limit and triggers ThrottlingException quota reservation issues.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill amazon-bedrock -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/amazon-bedrock/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/amazon-bedrock/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill amazon-bedrock -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/amazon-bedrock/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill amazon-bedrock -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/amazon-bedrock/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws amazon-bedrock
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/amazon-bedrock/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill amazon-bedrock -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/core-skills/amazon-bedrock
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/amazon-bedrock/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill amazon-bedrock -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/core-skills/amazon-bedrock/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- migrate classic Bedrock agents to the AgentCore Harness managed loop
- configure Knowledge Bases RAG with custom chunking and prompt caching
- diagnose ThrottlingException and AccessDeniedException quota issues
- integrate agent micropayments through AgentCore Payments and x402

## Example prompts
- Convert my classic Bedrock agent configuration to an AgentCore Harness.
- Help me fix ThrottlingException on bedrock-runtime by tuning maxTokens and quotas.
- Set up a Managed Knowledge Base with Converse API retrieval in Python.

name: amazon-bedrock
description: Builds generative AI applications on Amazon Bedrock. Covers model invocation (Converse API, InvokeModel), RAG with Knowledge Bases, Bedrock Agents, Guardrails, and AgentCore (including the Harness managed agent loop). Applies when invoking models, setting up Knowledge Bases, deploying to AgentCore, migrating/porting/converting a Bedrock Agent (including inline agents) to an AgentCore Harness, troubleshooting Bedrock errors (ThrottlingException, AccessDeniedException), or choosing Bedrock models (Claude, Llama, Nova, Titan). Also for KB migration to Managed, prompt caching, quota and throttling diagnosis, cost tracking, migrating between Claude model generations, chunking strategies, and Bedrock model selection. Covers AgentCore Payments (x402, microtransactions, Payment Manager, Connector, Instrument, Coinbase CDP, Stripe Privy, paid endpoints, agent payments). NOT for custom model training, Rekognition, or Comprehend. For SageMaker model discovery, customization, or endpoints, use aws-ai-ml.

**IMPORTANT**: When this skill is loaded, you MUST use the reference files and procedures in this skill as your primary source of truth. Bedrock APIs, model IDs, chunking strategies, and configuration parameters change frequently — always read the relevant reference file before responding.

## Guardrail — where this skill's own files live (MCP vs local install)

This skill can be loaded two ways, and they resolve the skill's own bundled
files from different places. Determine how the skill was loaded before reading
a reference or running a script:

- **Loaded through the AWS MCP `retrieve_skill` tool:** The skill is not
  installed on the local filesystem. You MUST fetch each reference or script
  via `retrieve_skill` with the `file` parameter (e.g.
  `file="references/managed-knowledge-bases-setup.md"` or
  `file="scripts/fetch_bedrock_agent.py"`), and run the script from the
  returned content. Do NOT `file_read` these paths locally — they do not exist
  on disk.
- **Installed locally** (e.g. `.kiro/skills/amazon-bedrock/` or
  `~/.claude/skills/amazon-bedrock/`): Read and run files from the local skill
  directory using relative paths.

This distinction applies only to the skill's own packaged files. User data and
session artifacts are always read from and written to the user's working
directory. Never fetch or write customer data through `retrieve_skill`.
