# alt-text

Writes and improves alt text for charts and images in R packages and Quarto documents. Useful when figures on a pkgdown site or in .qmd files have no description.

## What it does

The skill reads the code that builds each chart and pulls exact details from it: which variables sit on the axes, what color encodes, how many panels a facet has, whether fitted lines are overlaid. That is why the description comes out specific instead of vague. It first checks the project context: a `_pkgdown.yml` in the root sends it to `references/pkgdown.md`, otherwise `.qmd` files route it to `references/quarto.md`. If the format is still unclear, it asks you.

The description follows a three-part shape: chart type, data, key insight. The skill reads the caption (`fig-cap`, `fig.cap`) first and tries to complement it rather than repeat it. When the caption already states the takeaway, the alt text covers the visual structure; when the caption is generic, the takeaway moves into the description. Length tracks complexity, from two sentences for a simple plot to five for a faceted one with overlays.

A quality checklist keeps things consistent: start with the chart type, name the axis variables, include specific values the code reveals, avoid jargon like "geom" or "aesthetic". The skill accepts optional arguments for a figure label or a single file. It earns its place where charts are generated from code, because without the source the description ends up much thinner.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add posit-dev/skills --skill alt-text -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/alt-text/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/alt-text/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add posit-dev/skills --skill alt-text -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/alt-text/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add posit-dev/skills --skill alt-text -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/alt-text/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install posit-dev/skills alt-text
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/alt-text/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add posit-dev/skills --skill alt-text -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/posit-dev/skills --path alt-text
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/alt-text/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add posit-dev/skills --skill alt-text -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/posit-dev/skills/tree/HEAD/alt-text/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write alt text for a chart in a `.qmd` file without seeing the image
- audit whether every figure on a pkgdown site has a description
- turn a generic caption into a concrete description of the data
- add alt text to one figure by its label
- keep figure descriptions in a consistent structure

## Example prompts
- Add alt text for every figure in this `.qmd`
- Improve the alt text for the figure labeled `fig-norm`
- Audit alt text in `vignettes/plots.Rmd`

# Write Accessible Alt Text

Generate accessible alt text for data visualizations and images in this project.

ARGUMENTS
- label: (optional) specific figure label or chunk to target
- file: (optional) specific file to process

## Detect project type

Before proceeding, identify the project context and read the relevant reference.
Check for a `_pkgdown.yml` file in the project root to detect a pkgdown site:

```bash
ls _pkgdown.yml 2>/dev/null && echo "pkgdown" || echo "not pkgdown"
```

- **pkgdown site** (`_pkgdown.yml` present) → read `references/pkgdown.md`
- **Quarto documents** (no `_pkgdown.yml`, `.qmd` files present) → read `references/quarto.md`

If the context is still ambiguous, ask the user which format they are working in.

## Key advantage: source code access

Unlike typical alt text scenarios where you only see an image, **we have access to the code that generates each chart**. Use this to extract precise details:

**From plotting code:**
- Variable mappings → exact variable names for axes
- Color/fill mappings → what color encodes
- Plot type functions → scatter, histogram, line chart, etc.
- Trend lines or fitted curves → overlaid statistical fits
- Faceting/subplots → number of panels and what varies
- Color scales → encoding scheme (sequential, diverging, categorical)
- Axis labels and titles → customized labels

**From data generation code:**
- Random distributions → expected distribution shape
- Transformations → what was done to data
- Feature engineering → preprocessing applied
- Filtering/subsetting → what subset is shown

**From surrounding prose:**
- Text before/after the chunk explains the **purpose** and **key insight**
- Chapter context tells you what the figure is meant to teach
- This is often the best source for the "key insight" part of alt text

## Three-part structure (Amy Cesal's formula)

1. **Chart type** — first words identify the format
2. **Data description** — axes, variables, what is shown
3. **Key insight** — the pattern or takeaway (often found in surrounding text)
