A skill that writes state, decision and code-landmark files so work resumes from the same point after a break or a context limit.

## What it does

The skill splits checkpointing into three tiers. A quick update touches only `current-state.md`: active task, progress, next steps. A full checkpoint adds an entry to `decisions.md` and refreshes the table of files being modified. An archive writes `archive/YYYY-MM-DD[-topic].md`, clears verbose notes and updates `code-landmarks.md` when new patterns show up.

Everything lives under `_project_specs/session/`. Four files: live state, a decision log that is append-only, code landmarks, and the archive folder. `current-state.md` carries a Resume Instructions block, which is where you pick the work back up.

Triggers are spelled out. A decision was made, so it goes to the log. A task ran past 10 tool calls, so it gets a full checkpoint. A major feature is done, so it gets archived. The skill is marked `user-invocable: false`, so you cannot call it by hand; it fires at checkpoints. If your project already keeps its own state file, decide which one wins, or the agent will maintain two descriptions of the same work.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill session-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/session-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/session-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill session-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/session-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill session-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/session-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alinaqi/maggy session-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/session-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill session-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy --path skills/session-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/session-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill session-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy/tree/HEAD/skills/session-management/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick up work after a multi-day break
- record why one approach was chosen over another
- keep context when the window fills up
- find the right file in an unfamiliar codebase
- hand off an unfinished task to another person or agent

## Example prompts
- do a full checkpoint: update current-state.md and log the decision in decisions.md
- archive this session and write resume instructions
- update current-state.md, we are switching to another part of the codebase

# Session Management Skill

For maintaining context across long development sessions and enabling seamless resume after breaks.

---

## Core Principle

**Checkpoint at natural breakpoints, resume instantly.**

Long development sessions risk context loss. Proactively document state, decisions, and progress so any session can resume exactly where it left off - whether returning after a break or hitting context limits.

---

## Tiered Summarization Rules

### Tier 1: Quick Update (current-state.md only)
**Trigger**: After completing any small task or todo item
**Action**: Update "Active Task", "Progress", and "Next Steps" sections
**Time**: ~30 seconds

### Tier 2: Full Checkpoint (current-state.md + decisions.md)
**Trigger**:
- After completing a feature or significant change
- After any architectural/library decision
- After ~20 tool calls during active work
- When switching to a different area of the codebase

**Action**:
1. Update full current-state.md
2. Log any decisions to decisions.md
3. Update files being modified table

### Tier 3: Session Archive (archive/ + full checkpoint)
**Trigger**:
- End of work session
- Completing a major feature/milestone
- Before a significant context shift
- When context feels heavy (~50+ tool calls)

**Action**:
1. Create archive entry: `archive/YYYY-MM-DD[-topic].md`
2. Full checkpoint
3. Clear verbose notes from current-state.md
4. Update code-landmarks.md if new patterns introduced

### Decision Heuristic
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ After completing work, ask:                         │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Was a decision made?        → Log to decisions.md   │
│ Task took >10 tool calls?   → Full Checkpoint       │
│ Major feature complete?     → Archive               │
│ Ending session?             → Archive + Handoff     │
│ Otherwise                   → Quick Update          │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```

---

## Session State Structure

Create `_project_specs/session/` directory:

```
_project_specs/
└── session/
    ├── current-state.md      # Live session state (update frequently)
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 334195803a54e6ac

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 334195803a54e6ac tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
