# security

Sets up preventive security rules, blocks secrets from leaking into client bundles, and configures pre-commit hooks. Useful when handling auth, user input, or API keys.

## What it does

This skill enforces preventive security practices while writing new code. Rather than auditing a legacy repository for existing vulnerabilities, it focuses on guardrails: strict rules for `.gitignore`, schema validation with `zod` or `pydantic`, and separating server secrets from client-exposed prefixes in Vite or Next.js.

The agent works with `Read`, `Glob`, `Grep`, and `Bash` tools. It sets up `scripts/security-check.sh`, wires `detect-secrets` into git hooks, and adds a GitHub Actions workflow with `trufflehog`. Dependency audits rely on `npm audit` for Node.js or `safety` and `bandit` for Python. The local check will fail immediately if `.secrets.baseline` is missing when `detect-secrets` runs.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill security -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/security/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/security/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill security -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/security/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill security -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/security/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alinaqi/maggy security
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/security/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill security -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy --path skills/security
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/security/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill security -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy/tree/HEAD/skills/security/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- isolate server secrets from client bundles in Next.js and Vite
- prevent committing `.env` files and private keys via `.gitignore`
- configure git pre-commit checks with `detect-secrets` and `secretlint`
- automate dependency audits with `npm audit`, `safety`, and `bandit`

## Example prompts
- Check our Vite environment setup and prevent private API keys from leaking into client code
- Configure pre-commit security checks and scripts to block accidental token commits
- Add a GitHub Actions workflow to scan dependencies with safety and trufflehog

# Security Skill

Security best practices and automated security testing for all projects.

> This skill is **preventive** — how to write and ship secure code. To *audit*
> an existing codebase or PR for vulnerabilities, use the `security-audit` skill
> (structured, adversarial, evidence-grounded); for a quick pass over the current
> branch, run `/security-review`.

---

## Core Principle

**Security is not optional.** Every project must pass security checks before merge. Assume all input is malicious, all secrets will leak if committed, and all dependencies have vulnerabilities.

---

## Required Security Setup

### 1. Gitignore (Non-Negotiable)

Every project must have these in `.gitignore`:

```gitignore
# Environment files - NEVER commit
.env
.env.*
!.env.example
# Secrets
*.pem
*.key
*.p12
*.pfx
credentials.json
secrets.json
*-credentials.json
service-account*.json
# IDE and OS
.idea/
.vscode/settings.json
.DS_Store
Thumbs.db
# Dependencies
node_modules/
__pycache__/
*.pyc
.venv/
venv/
# Build outputs
dist/
build/
*.egg-info/
# Logs that might contain sensitive data
*.log
logs/
```

### 2. Environment Variables

**Create `.env.example`** with all required vars (no values):
```bash
# .env.example - Copy to .env and fill in values
# Server-side only (NEVER prefix with VITE_ or NEXT_PUBLIC_)
DATABASE_URL=
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=
SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY=
# Client-side safe (public, non-sensitive)
VITE_SUPABASE_URL=
VITE_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY=
```

### Frontend Environment Variables (Critical!)

**NEVER put secrets in client-exposed env vars:**

| Framework | Client-Exposed Prefix | Server-Only |
|-----------|----------------------|-------------|
| Vite | `VITE_*` | No prefix |
| Next.js | `NEXT_PUBLIC_*` | No prefix |
| Create React App | `REACT_APP_*` | N/A (no server) |

```typescript
// WRONG - Secret exposed to browser bundle!
const apiKey = import.meta.env.VITE_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY;
// CORRECT - Only public values client-side
const supabaseUrl = import.meta.env.VITE_SUPABASE_URL;
// CORRECT - Secrets stay server-side only
// In API route or server function:
const apiKey = process.env.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY;
```

**Vercel Environment Variables:**
- In Vercel dashboard, secrets without `VITE_` prefix are server-only
- Only `VITE_*` vars are bundled into client code
- Always verify in browser devtools → Sources → your bundle that secrets aren't exposed

**Validate environment at startup:**
```typescript
// config/env.ts
import { z } from 'zod';
const envSchema = z.object({
  DATABASE_URL: z.string().url(),
  ANTHROPIC_API_KEY: z.string().min(1),
  NODE_ENV: z.enum(['development', 'production', 'test']),
});
export const env = envSchema.parse(process.env);
```

```python
# config/env.py
from pydantic_settings import BaseSettings
class Settings(BaseSettings):
    database_url: str
````
