## What it does

The skill covers Reddit API work in Python with PRAW and in Node.js with Snoowrap. It walks through creating a Reddit app, setting environment variables, handling rate limits, and ships code samples for reading posts and comments, searching, posting, voting and streaming new submissions as they arrive.

You need a `client_id` and `client_secret` from your Reddit app; script apps also take a username and password. Reddit blocks non-authenticated requests, so even read-only browsing needs OAuth credentials. The limit is 100 queries per minute per OAuth client ID, averaged over a 10-minute window, and a proper `User-Agent` header is required to avoid blocks.

There is also a no-library path using `httpx` to fetch an application-only token directly. With Snoowrap, set `requestDelay` yourself — bulk pulls hit the rate limit fast otherwise.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill reddit-api -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/reddit-api/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/reddit-api/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill reddit-api -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/reddit-api/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill reddit-api -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/reddit-api/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alinaqi/maggy reddit-api
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/reddit-api/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill reddit-api -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy --path skills/reddit-api
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/reddit-api/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill reddit-api -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy/tree/HEAD/skills/reddit-api/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull subreddit posts for analysis
- flatten a comment tree into a list
- get an OAuth token for the Reddit API
- watch new posts and comments in real time
- post or reply from a script

## Example prompts
- Set up PRAW to read posts from r/python
- Write a Python stream for new subreddit comments
- How do I get a Reddit OAuth token with httpx, no library?

## Setup

### 1. Create Reddit App

1. Go to https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps
2. Click "Create App" or "Create Another App"
3. Fill in:
   - **Name**: Your app name
   - **App type**:
     - `script` - For personal use / bots you control
     - `web app` - For server-side apps with user auth
     - `installed app` - For mobile/desktop apps
   - **Redirect URI**: `http://localhost:8000/callback` (for dev)
4. Note your `client_id` (under app name) and `client_secret`

### 2. Environment Variables

```bash
# .env
REDDIT_CLIENT_ID=your_client_id
REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET=your_client_secret
REDDIT_USER_AGENT=YourApp/1.0 by YourUsername
REDDIT_USERNAME=your_username        # For script apps only
REDDIT_PASSWORD=your_password        # For script apps only
```

**User-Agent Format**: `<platform>:<app_id>:<version> (by /u/<username>)`

---

## Rate Limits

| Tier | Limit | Notes |
|------|-------|-------|
| OAuth authenticated | 100 QPM | Per OAuth client ID |
| Non-authenticated | Blocked | Must use OAuth |

- Limits averaged over 10-minute window
- Include `User-Agent` header to avoid blocks
- Respect `X-Ratelimit-*` response headers

## Python: PRAW (Recommended)

### Installation

```bash
pip install praw
# or
uv add praw
```

### Script App (Personal Use / Bots)

```python
import praw
from pydantic_settings import BaseSettings
class RedditSettings(BaseSettings):
    reddit_client_id: str
    reddit_client_secret: str
    reddit_user_agent: str
    reddit_username: str
    reddit_password: str
    class Config:
        env_file = ".env"
settings = RedditSettings()
reddit = praw.Reddit(
    client_id=settings.reddit_client_id,
    client_secret=settings.reddit_client_secret,
    user_agent=settings.reddit_user_agent,
    username=settings.reddit_username,
    password=settings.reddit_password,
)
# Verify authentication
print(f"Logged in as: {reddit.user.me()}")
```

### Read-Only (No User Auth)

```python
import praw
reddit = praw.Reddit(
    client_id="your_client_id",
    client_secret="your_client_secret",
    user_agent="YourApp/1.0 by YourUsername",
)
# Read-only mode - can browse, can't post/vote
reddit.read_only = True
```

### Common Operations

```python
# Get subreddit posts
subreddit = reddit.subreddit("python")
# Hot posts
for post in subreddit.hot(limit=10):
    print(f"{post.title} - {post.score} upvotes")
# New posts
for post in subreddit.new(limit=10):
    print(post.title)
# Search posts
for post in subreddit.search("pydantic", limit=5):
    print(post.title)
# Get specific post
submission = reddit.submission(id="abc123")
print(submission.title)
print(submission.selftext)
# Get comments
