## What it does

This skill connects your agent to the OpenAI Codex CLI to review branch diffs, uncommitted files, or specific commits. GPT-5.2-Codex inspects code changes and returns findings with file locations and actionable code suggestions.

Execution strictly requires Node.js 22 or newer alongside the global `@openai/codex` CLI package. You also need an `OPENAI_API_KEY` environment variable or an active ChatGPT subscription. Without the CLI installed, the skill will fail immediately.

Beyond interactive terminal sessions, the CLI supports headless automation with `codex exec`. Teams can enforce structured outputs using JSON schemas or trigger pull request checks directly via `@codex review` comments.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill codex-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/codex-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/codex-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill codex-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/codex-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill codex-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/codex-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alinaqi/maggy codex-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/codex-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill codex-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy --path skills/codex-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/codex-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill codex-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy/tree/HEAD/skills/codex-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- detect security vulnerabilities before opening a pull request
- inspect uncommitted local changes for bugs
- integrate structured code review into GitHub Actions pipelines
- audit a specific historical commit for performance bottlenecks

## Example prompts
- Use codex-review to inspect my uncommitted changes
- Run codex-review against the main branch focusing on security
- Review the latest commit using codex-review

---

## Installation

### Prerequisites

```bash
# Check Node.js version (requires 22+)
node --version
# Install Node.js 22 if needed
# macOS
brew install node@22
# Or via nvm
nvm install 22
nvm use 22
```

### Install Codex CLI

```bash
# Via npm (recommended)
npm install -g @openai/codex
# Via Homebrew (macOS)
brew install --cask codex
# Verify installation
codex --version
```

### Authentication

**Option 1: ChatGPT Subscription** (Plus, Pro, Team, Edu, Enterprise)
```bash
codex
# Follow prompts to sign in with ChatGPT account
```

**Option 2: OpenAI API Key**

| **Review against base branch** | Before opening PR - diffs against upstream |
| **Review uncommitted changes** | Before committing - staged + unstaged + untracked |
| **Review a commit** | Analyze specific SHA from history |
| **Custom instructions** | e.g., "Focus on security vulnerabilities" |

### Example Session

```
$ codex
> /review
Select review type:
❯ Review against a base branch
  Review uncommitted changes
  Review a commit
  Custom review instructions
Select base branch: main
