# harden

Runs your interface through edge cases: long text, network errors, RTL, empty states. Worth it before shipping to production.

## What it does

\`harden` lives in the `aladicf/better-web-ui` repo and pushes the agent to treat an interface as a set of scenarios that break the ideal mockup. It probes four areas: extreme inputs (very long and very short strings, emoji, RTL, thousands of list items, empty states), error paths (offline, timeouts, 400–500 codes, validation, rate limits, concurrent operations), internationalization (long translations, character sets, date, number and currency formats) and stressed use (small windows, noisy environments, rushed decisions).

Under the hood it pulls from a set of `frontend-design` references: semantic color for error and success states, error recovery, authentication and account recovery, permissions and roles UX, language and locale selection, component accessibility, empty-state patterns, loading feedback, micro failures. The skill picks the reference that matches the task. For overflow it ships concrete CSS: `text-overflow: ellipsis`, `-webkit-line-clamp`, `min-width: 0` on flex and grid items, `clamp()` for fluid type, logical properties like `margin-inline-start` instead of `margin-left`.

Before doing anything, the skill requires loading `$frontend-design` and following its context gathering protocol. If no design context exists yet, `$setup` has to run first. On a bare project with no design notes, that first run stops at the prep step.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill harden -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/harden/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/harden/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill harden -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/harden/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill harden -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/harden/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui harden
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/harden/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill harden -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/harden
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/harden/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill harden -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/harden/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check layout against long names and titles
- add error states for network and API failures
- set up RTL and logical CSS properties
- cover empty states and 404, 403, 500 screens
- stop the UI from janking on lost state

## Example prompts
- /harden
- run this screen through edge cases and show me what breaks
- add error and empty states to the orders list

Strengthen interfaces against edge cases, errors, internationalization issues, and real-world usage scenarios that break idealized designs.

Treat edge cases as design input, not as cleanup after the happy path already shipped.

Consult the [semantic color](../frontend-design/reference/semantic-color.md) reference when designing error, warning, success, and info states so semantic color stays clear and not purely decorative.
Consult the [status communication](../frontend-design/reference/status-communication.md) reference when hardening notification flows, activity feeds, summaries, or alert settings against fatigue and interruption overload.
Consult the [image treatment](../frontend-design/reference/image-treatment.md) when hardening user-uploaded media, screenshots, icon scaling, or image bleed behavior.
Consult the [error-recovery](../frontend-design/reference/error-recovery.md) reference when the task involves validation behavior, summaries, strict validators, recoverable field errors, or abandonment caused by poor recovery design.
Consult the [authentication and account recovery](../frontend-design/reference/authentication-and-account-recovery.md) reference when hardening sign-in, session expiry, password setup, MFA, lockout, or account-recovery flows.
Consult the [permissions and roles UX](../frontend-design/reference/permissions-and-roles-ux.md) reference when hardening role editors, request-access flows, 403 recovery, admin-vs-member surfaces, capability boundaries, or risky permission changes.
