## What it does

The skill inspects target directories for repeated cards, form controls, and inline style values. Its workflow follows five distinct stages: discover candidates, outline an extraction plan, generate components with semantic tokens, migrate old instances, and document the results. Elements qualify for extraction when they appear at least three times across the codebase.

When an existing primitive library like `shadcn/ui` is already present, the skill avoids re-wrapping standard primitives. It creates higher-level compound sections instead, such as filter panels or settings views. Token generation enforces constrained spacing and typography scales, stopping arbitrary one-off values from polluting the project.

Execution requires loading `$frontend-design` for guidelines and context gathering. If the project lacks established design context entirely, you must run `$setup` beforehand or the extraction plan will lack system boundaries.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill extract -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/extract/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/extract/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill extract -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/extract/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill extract -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/extract/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui extract
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/extract/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill extract -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/extract
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/extract/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill extract -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- consolidate scattered button and card variants into shared components
- convert hardcoded spacing and color values into semantic tokens
- build compound layout patterns on top of existing UI libraries
- replace duplicate legacy markup and purge dead component code

## Example prompts
- /extract src/components
- /extract consolidate repeated product cards into a shared component
- /extract convert hardcoded color and spacing values into tokens

Identify reusable patterns, components, and design tokens, then extract and consolidate them into the design system for systematic reuse.

The goal is not to capture every value in the codebase. The goal is to create constrained systems that reduce future design decisions and keep the interface coherent.

Consult the [design-system alignment](../frontend-design/reference/design-system-alignment.md) reference for tokens vs components vs patterns, drift, and how to avoid turning inconsistency into token sprawl.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/extract`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

## Discover

Analyze the target area to identify extraction opportunities:

1. **Find the design system**: Locate your design system, component library, or shared UI directory (grep for "design system", "ui", "components", etc.). Understand its structure:
   - Component organization and naming conventions
   - Design token structure (if any)
   - Documentation patterns
   - Import/export conventions

   **CRITICAL**: If no design system exists, ask before creating one. Understand the preferred location and structure first.

2. **Identify patterns**: Look for:
   - **Repeated components**: Similar UI patterns used multiple times (buttons, cards, inputs, etc.)
   - **Hard-coded values**: Colors, spacing, typography, shadows that should be tokens
   - **Inconsistent variations**: Multiple implementations of the same concept (3 different button styles)
   - **Reusable patterns**: Layout patterns, composition patterns, interaction patterns worth systematizing
  - **Missing systems**: Places where the team is clearly re-solving spacing, type, color, radius, or elevation repeatedly

3. **Assess value**: Not everything should be extracted. Consider:
   - Is this used 3+ times, or likely to be reused?
   - Would systematizing this improve consistency?
   - Is this a general pattern or context-specific?
   - What's the maintenance cost vs benefit?

## Plan Extraction

Create a systematic extraction plan:

- **Components to extract**: Which UI elements become reusable components?
- **Tokens to create**: Which hard-coded values become design tokens?
- **System boundaries**: Which token sets should stay intentionally small so they guide decisions instead of documenting chaos?
- **Variants to support**: What variations does each component need?
