## What it does

The skill audits product text for jargon, ambiguity, passive voice, wordiness and wrong assumptions about the reader. Then it proposes wording for labels and values, errors, form instructions, buttons, help text and empty states.

It does not run alone. The skill loads `$frontend-design` for design principles and the context gathering protocol, and demands `$setup` when no design context exists yet. From there it pulls references under `../frontend-design/reference/`: `ux-writing.md` for interface microcopy, `interface-honesty.md` for manipulative or evasive wording, `error-recovery.md` when the fix depends on validation behaviour, `status-communication.md` for notifications and badges, `marketing-copywriting.md` for headlines and CTA strategy, `copy-editing-sweeps.md` for editing existing copy in passes. Missing those files is a hard stop, so check that the repository came down whole.

Before touching anything it asks about the audience's technical level, the reader's state of mind and whether you are writing new copy or editing what exists. Invoke it as `/clarify` with an optional target argument.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill clarify -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clarify/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clarify/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill clarify -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clarify/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill clarify -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clarify/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui clarify
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clarify/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill clarify -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/clarify
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clarify/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill clarify -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/clarify/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rewrite an error message so the fix is obvious
- strip jargon out of settings labels
- turn generic buttons into specific actions
- write an empty state that shows the first step
- edit existing copy for passive voice and padding

## Example prompts
- /clarify signup form
- /clarify the invalid email error
- /clarify labels and help text on the settings page

```text
name: clarify
description: Improve UX writing, marketing copy, labels, microcopy, instructions, and error messages so interfaces and product messaging are easier to understand and act on. Use when the user mentions confusing copy, unclear labels, bad error text, weak CTAs, hard-to-follow instructions, or wanting better UX writing.
Identify and improve unclear, confusing, or poorly written product text to make the product easier to understand, trust, and act on.
## MANDATORY PREPARATION
Users start this workflow with `/clarify`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first. Additionally gather: audience technical level, users' mental state in context, and whether you are writing new copy or editing existing copy.
Consult the [ux-writing reference](../frontend-design/reference/ux-writing.md) for labels, errors, empty states, confirmations, and interface microcopy.
Consult the [interface honesty](../frontend-design/reference/interface-honesty.md) reference when the copy problem involves manipulative friendliness, evasive progress language, consent wording, cancellation language, upgrade pressure, or any surface that should sound more assertive and truthful.
Consult the [error-recovery](../frontend-design/reference/error-recovery.md) reference when copy changes depend on validation behavior, summaries, examples of correct input, or recoverability patterns rather than wording alone.
Consult the [status communication](../frontend-design/reference/status-communication.md) reference when the wording touches notifications, alerts, badges, digests, reminders, or notification settings.
Consult [marketing copywriting](../frontend-design/reference/marketing-copywriting.md) when the work touches headlines, landing pages, feature pages, onboarding promises, lifecycle messaging, marketplace listings, or CTA strategy.
Consult [copy editing sweeps](../frontend-design/reference/copy-editing-sweeps.md) when improving existing copy through focused editing passes instead of rewriting it wholesale.
## Assess Current Copy
Identify what makes the text unclear or ineffective:
1. **Find clarity problems**:
   - **Jargon**: Technical terms users won't understand
   - **Ambiguity**: Multiple interpretations possible
   - **Passive voice**: "Your file has been uploaded" vs "We uploaded your file"
   - **Length**: Too wordy or too terse
   - **Assumptions**: Assuming user knowledge they don't have
   - **Missing context**: Users don't know what to do or why
   - **Tone mismatch**: Too formal, too casual, or inappropriate for situation
2. **Understand the context**:
   - Who's the audience? (Technical? General? First-time users?)
```

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 2aab1837fb96fd47 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
