## What it does

You start it with `/audit`, and it behaves like a code review rather than a design critique. It looks at what is measurable in the implementation: text contrast, ARIA roles and labels, tab order and focus indicators, heading hierarchy, alt text, lazy loading, bundle size, wasted re-renders, hard-coded colors, broken dark mode, fixed widths and touch targets under 44x44px.

Each of the five areas gets a score from 0 to 4 against written criteria. Findings are tagged P0 through P3, and an action plan comes with them. The skill does not fix anything itself — it documents issues so other commands can handle them.

Before it starts, it asks you to load `$frontend-design` and follow its context gathering protocol; with no design context yet, `$setup` comes first. For accessibility it points at axe-core, WAVE and Pa11y, but treats their output as a fast warning system rather than a verdict, since anti-aliasing and overlay layers produce false contrast failures. The command takes one argument: the area to check, such as a feature, page or component.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/audit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/audit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch text contrast that falls below 4.5:1
- check whether keyboard focus is visible and ordered
- replace hard-coded colors with theme tokens
- find animations on width and height instead of transform
- sort findings into P0–P3 before a release

## Example prompts
- /audit checkout page
- /audit product card component
- /audit auth feature

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/audit`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

---

Run systematic **technical** quality checks and generate a comprehensive report. Don't fix issues — document them for other commands to address.

This is a code-level audit, not a design critique. Check what's measurable and verifiable in the implementation.

Consult the [hierarchy checklist](../frontend-design/reference/hierarchy-checklist.md) when reviewing grayscale hierarchy, action priority, section-title restraint, and label/value treatment.
Consult the [ai slop detection](../frontend-design/reference/ai-slop-detection.md) when checking for generic trend-driven anti-patterns.
Consult the [action hierarchy](../frontend-design/reference/action-hierarchy.md) when reviewing primary, secondary, tertiary, and destructive actions.
Consult the [semantic color](../frontend-design/reference/semantic-color.md) when checking whether color is communicating state or just decoration.
Consult the [surface separation](../frontend-design/reference/surface-separation.md) when checking whether borders, shadows, cards, overlap, and background shifts are being used intentionally.
Consult the [image treatment](../frontend-design/reference/image-treatment.md) when screenshots, icons, or media handling affect usability or polish.
Consult the [accessibility testing](../frontend-design/reference/accessibility-testing.md) when integrating automated checks (axe, WAVE, Pa11y) into the audit workflow or CI pipeline.

Still, when the implementation clearly violates the shared design system or obvious Refactoring UI principles — weak hierarchy, arbitrary spacing, gray text on color, every button styled as primary — call it out as an implementation issue, not a matter of taste.

## Diagnostic Scan

Run comprehensive checks across 5 dimensions. Score each dimension 0-4 using the criteria below.

### 1. Accessibility (A11y)

**Check for**:
- **Contrast issues**: Text contrast ratios < 4.5:1 (or 7:1 for AAA)
- **Missing ARIA**: Interactive elements without proper roles, labels, or states
- **Keyboard navigation**: Missing focus indicators, illogical tab order, keyboard traps
- **Semantic HTML**: Improper heading hierarchy, missing landmarks, divs instead of buttons
