# state-management

A skill that classifies React state into packets and picks the narrowest owner, so you stop arguing about libraries before you know what the state is.

## What it does

The skill sorts state into packets: local UI, shared subtree, URL and navigation, form lifecycle, server state, client workflow. You name one primary packet first, then choose the smallest owner that matches its lifecycle. Library comparisons come last, and only if a client-workflow packet is still on the table.

Six steps run the whole thing: pick the packet, choose the owner, run the anti-pattern check, compare client stores, name mixed architectures, route adjacent work out. Every answer names the tempting wrong owner too, because that is what usually breaks the codebase. Reference files under `references/` cover ambiguous requests, the decision matrix and handoff boundaries.

This is not for rerender tuning, API contract design or debugging state that is already broken — those go to `react-best-practices`, `api-design` and `debugging`. If the architecture is settled and you just need code, there is nothing to choose. Install runs through `npx skills add`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill state-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/state-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/state-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill state-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/state-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill state-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/state-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills state-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/state-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill state-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/state-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/state-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill state-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/state-management/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- sort state into packets and name the primary one
- choose between Context, Zustand, Redux Toolkit and Jotai
- move filters and tabs into the URL so links and back button work
- keep server cache out of a client store
- kill the one-store-for-everything proposal

## Example prompts
- Classify the state in this app: what's local, what's server, what belongs in the URL
- We have prop drilling five levels deep — Context or Zustand?
- List filters live in Redux but I want shareable links. What should I do?

# State Management

Use this skill when the real question is:

**What packet is this state, who should own it, and what tempting wrong owner should we avoid?**

Do **not** start with a library debate. Start by naming one primary packet, then choose the smallest owner that matches its lifecycle.

Read [references/ownership-packets-and-route-outs.md](references/ownership-packets-and-route-outs.md) before handling a mixed or ambiguous request.
Read [references/decision-matrix.md](references/decision-matrix.md) when the packet is clear and you need to compare likely owners.
Read [references/handoff-boundaries.md](references/handoff-boundaries.md) when the request may actually belong to `react-best-practices`, `api-design`, `debugging`, `design-system`, `design-system`, or `responsive-design`.

## When to use this skill
- Decide whether a frontend problem is local UI state, shared subtree state, URL/navigation state, form state, server state, or long-lived client workflow state.
- Turn vague requests like “we need state management” into a concrete ownership recommendation.
- Choose between Context, Zustand, Redux Toolkit, Jotai, TanStack Query, or router-native ownership without treating them as interchangeable.
- Stop “one store for everything” proposals before implementation starts.
- Produce a short ownership brief for implementation or review.

## When not to use this skill
- **The main task is rerender churn, hydration mismatch, waterfalls, or client/server performance behavior** → use `react-best-practices`.
