## What it does

security-best-practices starts by framing the surface, workflow, current controls, and likely risk. It then selects one primary hardening mode: browser and perimeter policy, session and CSRF protection, abuse controls, validation and unsafe execution, secrets and runtime configuration, or review and verification.

The result is a bounded brief with the control state, highest-risk gaps, first changes, and a verification plan. Related work is routed elsewhere: auth-stack decisions go to `authentication-setup`, schema work to `database-schema-design`, concrete code fixes to `debugging` or `code-review`.

It can use `Bash`, `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Glob`, and `Grep`. Cloud IAM and auth-stack selection sit outside its main route, so those jobs belong with infrastructure-specific or authentication skills.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill security-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/security-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/security-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill security-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/security-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill security-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/security-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills security-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/security-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill security-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/security-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/security-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill security-best-practices -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- classify the missing security layer
- turn an OWASP request into a focused hardening brief
- prioritize fixes for a web app or API
- attach verification steps to security changes
- route auth, schema, and code-fix work correctly

## Example prompts
- Review this API and identify the single highest-risk missing security layer.
- Turn these launch-review notes into a scoped hardening brief with a verification plan.
- Decide whether this issue belongs to CSRF, abuse controls, validation, or secret handling, then route adjacent work.

# Security Best Practices

Use this skill when the job is to **name one missing security layer and turn it into a bounded hardening brief**.

The job is not to dump a giant OWASP list, middleware catalog, or scanner parade.
The job is to:
1. frame the surface and risk,
2. choose one primary hardening mode,
3. recommend the smallest credible first slice,
4. name the verification ladder,
5. route adjacent work honestly.

Read these support docs first:
- [references/modes-and-boundaries.md](references/modes-and-boundaries.md)
- [references/mode-packets-and-route-outs.md](references/mode-packets-and-route-outs.md)
- [references/hardening-review-checklist.md](references/hardening-review-checklist.md)
- [references/verification-ladder.md](references/verification-ladder.md)

## When to use this skill
- A team says “make this secure” and the missing security layer is still unclear
- A web app, API, marketing-site flow, admin panel, or game-service surface needs a hardening pass before launch or migration
- You need to decide whether the main problem is CSP/headers, cookies/CSRF, abuse controls, validation/unsafe execution, secret handling, or weak verification
- Scanner findings, OWASP requests, or launch-review notes need to be converted into one prioritized hardening brief
- The current stack has some controls already, but trust is low and the next verification step is unclear

## When not to use this skill
